The Iraqi Revolution of 1920

The Iraqi Revolution of 1920 was a major uprising against British occupation. It began in the summer of 1920 in the Middle Euphrates and quickly spread across Iraq, uniting tribes, religious scholars, and different sections of society in their demand for independence. Despite the revolutionaries’ limited resources, they fiercely resisted British forces. Britain eventually suppressed the uprising through overwhelming military power, but the revolution forced it to reconsider its plans for direct rule. As a result, the Iraqi Kingdom was established in 1921, with Faisal I becoming king. Although the revolution was militarily defeated, it became a lasting symbol of Iraqi nationalism, unity, and the struggle for independence.
