Every day, somewhere or another, clashes, chases and counter-chases and even gunfire are taking place and it is precisely at those moments that journalists are risking their lives to protect the public’s right to know. In the past, many journalists have been injured or killed during election-time violence, yet most of those responsible have never been held accountable. An attack on a journalist is not merely an assault on a professional individual; it is, in fact, a serious attempt to suppress the truth, distort information, and weaken democracy. A state that fails to protect its citizens’ right to know can never be safe or well-governed. Therefore, ensuring the safety of journalists is not only a humanitarian responsibility. it is an essential condition for safeguarding national transparency, accountability and a democratic future.

The conduct of this US Bangla Group media outlet is clearly unethical, because it presented a dialogue from an old drama as a real-life statement, which misled readers and damaged the public image of the individuals involved. According to journalistic ethics, it is essential to clearly explain the context of any information before publication, but in this case, the distinction between drama and reality was deliberately concealed to sensationalize a matter related to a personal relationship. As a result, not only was journalistic credibility undermined, but public sentiment was also misdirected, which is a clear example of irresponsible media practice.

This incident is not merely an isolated example. rather, it represents a classic case of strategically creating public misconception through media by using 'out-of-context' framing. In the report, the 'out-of-context' technique was applied by extracting a specific portion of the original statement or event and presenting it in isolation, thereby stripping it of its original context and giving it an entirely different meaning. Sithi Saha’s dramatic dialogue, which was purely part of an performance, was portrayed as a real-life personal attack, thereby misleading the audience. Personal relationships, breakups and emotional hurt are three elements that can very easily influence human emotions. Content of this nature deliberately targets those emotions so that people become angry or sympathetic without fully understanding the facts. The media exploits these emotional triggers to attract readers and generate quick reactions. This is a part of the emotional manipulation strategy. In addition, the use of a clickbait headline is absolutely evident. By placing the dialogue 'It’s impossible to maintain a relationship with an animal like you' in the headline, the report presents it as if the singer directly attacked Tahsan. However, at first glance, nowhere in the news item does it clearly indicate that this is a scene from a drama. This is essentially a deceptive tactic, as readers reasonably expected the truth to align with the headline.

Ideology, support, or personal beliefs may remain at the polling station, but they have no place in a report. Because parties can change and power can shift, but documents remain, and the future judges the credibility of journalism through those documents. Therefore, the only safe position for journalism during elections is to stand not with emotion, but with evidence. Not in favor of parties, but in favor of documentation. We have created an AI-generated awareness song on this issue. Released today, the song highlights the message of standing with evidence, not with political parties, in election-time journalism.

What the media chooses to emphasize directs the audience’s attention in a particular direction. In this case, the headline primarily focuses readers’ attention on the expenditure related to a single film, pushing the spending on digital labs and other sectors into the background. In that sense, Jugantor has applied Agenda-Setting Theory. On the other hand, the headline and photo card form a specific perception in the reader’s mind even before reading the full article. Elements like 'BDT 4,211 crore' and 'film' push readers toward a judgment before engaging with the detailed information. As a result, the scope for neutral information processing is reduced. The media has been doing this deliberately for the past several years. Such discrepancies between the headline and the core content of a report raise ethical questions about news presentation. In matters of public interest and political sensitivity, such framing can create confusion among readers and increase the risk of undermining media credibility. When there is no clear consistency between the headline, photo card, and the main information of a news report, it not only misleads readers but also raises serious questions about the professional responsibility and ethical standards of the media. Especially in reports involving state expenditure and political contexts, maintaining accuracy and relevance is critically important for journalism.

the film 'Mujib Bhai.' The same claim was also presented in the photo card used with the news. As a result, readers are led to assume that the entire mentioned amount was spent solely on producing that film. After the publication of the news, several other media outlets, including Amader Shomoy Dot Com, Banglavision, and Barta Bazar, republished the information in the same manner. However, a different picture emerges in the body of the news. It states that the funds spent from the state exchequer under the name of digital transformation included both the establishment of Sheikh Russell Digital Labs and the production of the film 'Mujib Bhai' through the CRI. In other words, BDT 4,211.22 crore was not spent exclusively on film production. Rather, it was a combined expenditure covering multiple initiatives. At the same time, the report separately mentions that BDT 16 crore was spent on the production of the film 'Khoka.' According to Framing Theory, the way information is presented in the media, especially through headlines and visuals, significantly influences audience perception. In this case, the headline and photo card present a limited interpretation of the expenditure, creating the impression that the funds were spent on a single film rather than as part of a combined allocation. As a result, a simplified version of reality is highlighted compared to the information provided in the body of the report.

The opinion was written by Jyoti Rahman and Subail Bin Alam. However, Prothom Alo itself shared the column on Facebook using a photo card that did not mention the names of the authors and instead highlighted only the controversial headline, placing the word 'opinion' in very small text below. This led to confusion among general readers, many of whom thought it might be the newspaper’s own editorial or official position. As a media outlet, Prothom Alo had the responsibility to clearly present the article as an opinion piece and the personal analysis of the authors. Had the authors’ names been clearly shown, the word 'opinion' more strongly highlighted and a brief summary of the article’s relevant points included, this confusion could have been avoided. Such presentation raises questions about the newspaper’s neutrality and accountability and harms the public’s ability to form informed opinions. To ensure accurate information flow, media outlets must act with greater caution and responsibility, especially on politically sensitive topics.

Cutting off internet access is not merely a technical measure, it is a deliberate attempt to restrict the free flow of information and undermine press freedom. As a result of these digital blackouts, media outlets are unable to report regularly and accurately, severely affecting the public’s right to information. The suppression of journalists and the obstruction of independent reporting only deepen fear, misinformation and instability during times of economic and social crisis. Bangladesh Media Monitor calls on the Iranian authorities to immediately restore internet connectivity, ensure the safety of journalists and end all forms of repression against independent media in accordance with international human rights standards.

Even if it is later proven false, corrections or apologies cannot undo the damage. What is said live cannot be edited out. It gets recorded, screenshot, and permanently circulated. During election periods, such irresponsible live reporting fuels rumors, heightens tensions, and increases the risk of violence, while also putting journalists themselves in danger. Live reporting is not just about turning on a camera. It demands verification, restraint, and professional responsibility. We demand responsible journalism, not reckless live reporting.
