ANOTHER ONE TAKES THE KNEE A jailed neo-Nazi associate who called Jews “the greatest enemy to this nation” at an anti-immigration Australia Day rally has told a court he hopes not to be “perceived as hateful”, as he appeals his prison sentence. On Thursday, Brandan Koschel, 31, appeared from prison via audiovisual link at the Sydney Downing Centre District Court. Many of his family members including his mother and partner were present. The 31-year-old’s links to the outlawed neo-Nazi group National Socialist Network were scrutinised by crown solicitors and presiding judge Tanya Smith. He admitted under cross-examination that he had attended NSN “barbecues” and “hiking trips” but denied being a fully fledged “member” and said he encountered NSN associates by “chance” at the January 26 rally. “Were they (Koschel’s NSN associates) the ones encouraging you to speak?”, asked the crown solicitor. “Yes,” Koschel replied. “That month before you attended the rally – are you aware there was an incident affecting the Jewish community in Bondi?” said the crown solicitor. “I definitely see the timing was incredibly insensitive,” Koschel replied. He said he had not given “a lot of attention” to the Bondi massacre, which took place about a month before his offending. He said the event was not “present” on his mind before deciding to speak. “With those recent events in December, it could potentially add to the stress that the Jewish community felt … I have addressed the Jewish community and asked for their forgiveness,” said Koschel. “I don’t want to be perceived as a hateful person … I’m ashamed that that’s now tied to my name.” Koschel’s defence lawyer argued his offending sat at the “low end” of offending. Koschel told the court he had “abandoned” white supremacist ideology and would never associate with national socialists again, stating social media “echo chambers” and rising rental prices had driven him to be radicalised. Koschel’s appeal matter will return to the District Court on March 26 for judgment.
