🗡American Men of Action🗡 Charles B. Allen Nativist street fighter The Order of the Star Spangled Banner was an oath-bound brotherhood in NYC. It was created in 1849 by Charles to protest the rise of immigration into the United States. To join the Order, a man had to be at least 21 years old, a Protestant, and willing to obey the Order's dictates without question. Members were Nativists, citizens opposed to immigration. Members invariably responded to questions about the OSSB by claiming that they "knew nothing". This practice caused newspapers to label them "Know Nothing". The OSSB would eventually form the nucleus of the nativist Know Nothing movement which ran candidates in 1855–56 under the American party ticket. These anti-immigrant protests culminated into riots in Philly in 1844; St. Luis in 1854, Cincinnati and Louisville in 1855; Baltimore in 1856; Washington D.C., and NYC in 1857; and New Orleans in 1858.
