On this day in 1977 J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion' was first published. Although the book is credited to J.R.R. Tolkien, it was actually published four years after his death, with his son Christopher Tolkien editing and organizing his father’s vast collection of unfinished manuscripts, drafts, notes, and writings. Christopher had the incredibly difficult task of turning decades of Tolkien’s constantly evolving work into a single book that could be published. He didn’t simply find a finished manuscript - he had to work through material Tolkien had written and rewritten throughout his life. The result was The Silmarillion, published on September 15, 1977, giving readers the history of Arda, from the creation of the world to the events leading into the Third Age. And without Christopher Tolkien, we may never have had this book in the form we know today.
