TIL the reason the stereotype of black people liking chicken exists is because of white peoples' attempt to bring down the success of black people. During slavery, black people were not allowed to own big farm animals like cows and horses, but they were allowed to own chickens because, at the time, chickens were considered to have very low economic value, which they did. However, black women started to take advantage of this and started to cook them with recipes and seasoning they knew from their home countries in western Africa and started selling them to people on trains. Their recipes were so good that this business became very successful and these women were able to send their kids to school and help their husbands feed the family. It also brought up the economic value of chickens. But, of course, white people couldn't have this as it didn't fit the white supremacist structure of the time, so they started spreading images and propaganda saying "look at these savages and barbarians eating chicken."

Something that I always notice and get irritated by in over-the-shoulder dialogue shots in movies is that in some movies and scenes, the listener character's hand positions don't stay consistent when we switch back and forth between the two characters. This is especially maddening to me if there isn't a reasonable amount of time for them to have switched their position in between the shots. Like when you see character B's hand in one position while character A starts saying "for ex-", then we pan to character A while they continue to say "-ample" but now character B's hand is in a completely different position😭. It really really bugs me😂, is it the same for you guys or do I have a touch of the 'tism? Anyways, you guys should check out the video I took those screenshots from though. It is such a beautiful scene made by Joshua Neal. It's kind of a series of videos too so if you want to see Nala and his story, go back a few videos. You won't regret it, I promise.

Weird Stuff Humans Have Done: A History Reel; Part 1 Humanity has accomplished incredible things. We landed on the Moon. We eradicated smallpox. We built the internet. We've also, on at least one occasion, looked at a dead politician and thought: "👀...Yum😃" Welcome to Weird Stuff Humans Have Done: A History Reel, a series where we dig through history's attic and pull out the stories that make you wonder how our species ever made it this far. Today's exhibit comes from the Netherlands in 1672. The Dutch call that year Rampjaar: the Year of Disaster. Which, in retrospect, is an impressively understated name. 1672 was not a fun year for the dutch. Everybody and their momma: France, England and 2 German bishoprics invaded and my wallet was better than their economy. The public was, understandably, furious. If Twitter had existed, it would've been unusable. Naturally, the country needed someone to blame. Enter Johan de Witt, the Grand Pensionary of Holland, the closest thing the Dutch Republic had to a prime minister. For years he had been one of the republic's most influential statesmen. But when everything started falling apart, competence suddenly mattered less than finding a convenient villain. His brother, Cornelis, was arrested on shaky accusations of treason, tortured, and sentenced to exile. When Johan went to the prison to escort him home, an angry mob was waiting for them outside. The brothers were dragged into the street, beaten, shot, stabbed, stripped naked, and hung upside down before a cheering crowd. As horrifying as that is...we still haven't reached the weird part. Members of the mob began cutting pieces off the bodies. Some took fingers. Others took ears. Some reportedly preserved body parts as souvenirs. And according to multiple contemporary eyewitnesses...some people roasted and ate pieces of the brothers' bodies. Political hatred had spiraled so far out of control that murdering your opponents apparently wasn't enough. To be fair to the Dutch, this wasn't exactly a national potluck. It was a violent mob acting during one of the darkest moments in Dutch history, and historians still debate how many people actually participated in the cannibalism. But the evidence that some did is strong enough that the story has survived centuries of scrutiny. History often gets taught as a list of kings, wars, and treaties. But every now and then you stumble across an event that makes you close the history book, stare into the distance for a few seconds, and quietly whisper, "What... was wrong with people?" The uncomfortable answer is that it's usually the same things that are wrong with people today: fear, anger, propaganda, tribalism, and a desperate need to blame someone when the world falls apart. The methods have improved...well, sort of...but we aren't so different from our angry cannibalistic friends up north. See you in the next installment of Weird Stuff Humans Have Done, where we'll once again prove that reality has always been stranger than fiction.

Haven't forgotten about this btw. I finished writing a sort of mini meta analysis on the subject and am now condensing that into an essay/article format for you guys like my other deep dives. I'll post the meta analysis later on if you guys want to read the research more extensively later on though.
