English Explorer Martin Frobisher, who later helped defeat the Spanish Armada, led three voyages in search of the Northwest Passage during the 16th century. While he never succeeded in finding the Northwest Passage, he successfully established England's claim to what is now the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
During his third voyage in 1578, his fleet was scattered due to ice and storms. When they successfully met at Frobisher Bay in present-day Nunavut, they held a feast to thank God for their survival. They ate salted beef, biscuits, and mushy peas.
This is considered the first Thanksgiving celebration in Canada. Happy Thanksgiving!
