In many countries, children enjoy more freedom than ever before. While this shift can bring certain advantages, I believe that they are overshadowed by the drawbacks.
One major benefit has to do with a stronger parent-child bond. As children are given more freedom, they likely feel closer to their parents, increasing the chance of being transparent about their mistakes and failures—a desirable outcome for both parties. If a child fails a school exam, for example, being open about it helps them fix this quickly and prevent such cases in the future without the extra burden of hiding it from parents. Realizing the importance of honesty as one of the pillars of any connection, they can then have an easier time forming other meaningful relationships that can last a lifetime.
Despite this, the downsides of this freedom are far more concerning. One of these is the development of entitlement. When parents constantly comply with children’s seemingly inconsequential wishes—buy their favorite toys, or let them access phone at will—these children can grow up with unrealistic expectations: the world should operate on their terms. This mindset is bound to snowball into more significant problems later on, such as the inability to handle failures and rejections, which in turn lead to further disappointments and start a vicious cycle of depression.
Another key concern relates to the potential for addiction. If left to their own devices, children are likely to be influenced by external threats and develop harmful habits, ranging from playing video games to substance abuse. These often result in isolation and its well-documented effects, ranging from stress to clinical depression and even suicide in extreme cases.
In conclusion, while giving more freedom to children can improve their relationships with parents, the drawbacks—feelings of entitlement and addiction—are far more detrimental. In my opinion, a healthy amount of parental supervision is necessary to nurture well-rounded children.
