If you're from a poor/medium family and you get your first international remote job that pays well, don't rush to let everybody know you're making that kind of money. Act like your life hasn't changed overnight.
Here's why. The moment everyone believes you're earning "big money," the expectations begin. Family responsibilities start landing on your head, especially if you're the firstborn. Of course, you want to help. That's normal. But the early stage of your career is the most delicate. Ask yourself one question: If you lose that job tomorrow, what happens?
1. Protect the job first.
The first thing on your mind should be, "How do I keep this job?" Take your communication seriously. Deliver quality work. Be reliable. Meet deadlines. Learn how to work with people from different cultures. Become someone your employer doesn't want to lose.
2. Save while you're still living under your parents' roof.
You're in one of the best financial positions you'll ever have. If there's stable electricity at home, use it. If there's internet, use it. Eat the same meals you've been eating. Don't suddenly start living like you've made it. Save aggressively.
3. Avoid unnecessary distractions.
Leave women alone. Leave men alone. Leave unnecessary enjoyment alone. If you're just getting your first remote job, your focus shouldn't be relationships that drain your time and money. Focus.
4. Upgrade your work setup.
Buy a better laptop if you need one. Upgrade your phone if it affects your work. Get a better chair. If you can't afford an ergonomic chair yet, get something better than what you have. Take care of your back because your body is part of your career.
5. Learn how to earn a second income.
Do this consistently for the next 6 to 12 months. Then shift your focus to landing your second income. That could be another remote job, freelancing, consulting, or a side business built around your skills. One income is good. Two incomes change your life.
6. Protect your savings.
Don't leave your money sitting idle. Keep it in low-risk investments or money market funds where you can still access it if there's an emergency. Build at least 6 to 12 months of living expenses before taking bigger financial risks. Don't chase unrealistic returns.
7. Build your online presence.
Post consistently. Share what you're learning. Help people. Let people in your industry know your name. Be active on two or three platforms. Your online presence becomes insurance because your next opportunity may come from someone who already knows your work.
8. Build your network offline.
Go to events. Meet people. Talk to strangers. Learn how to hold conversations. Build genuine relationships. Your network can open doors your CV never will.
9. Improve your presentation.
Dress well. Not flashy. Just clean, simple, and presentable. Wear a good perfume. You don't need expensive clothes to leave a good impression.
10. Learn financial education.
Understand budgeting. Understand investing. Understand taxes. Understand how businesses work. Learn how to make your money work for you. Don't gamble your future chasing quick money. Build slowly and protect your capital.
11. Diversify your income.
A remote job can disappear overnight. Clients can leave. Companies can lay people off. Don't build your life around one source of income. Build multiple streams.
12. Build before you carry everyone.
Don't disappear from your family because you got your first remote job. Don't immediately carry the financial responsibility of the entire house either. Build yourself first. The stronger your foundation becomes, the more people you'll be able to help without destroying yourself.
I know one thing is permanent. If you don't intentionally work your way out of poverty, poverty will keep chasing you. So move quietly. Build patiently. Save aggressively. Invest wisely. Keep learning. Keep showing up. Let your results speak before your mouth does. | 105 |
