| 3 | Been hearing a lot about Doxzoo, a company that prints and binds PDFs, and thought I’d try it out, seeing as I was in need of a physical copy of this work (in previous statuses) which I couldn’t find anywhere in the UK.
Overall, have to say I’m quite happy with it. Good quality, arrived in just a week, can be a bit pricy depending on the book size and how high quality you want your copy to be, but if you keep the stylistic choices to a minimum, it isn’t too bad. I’d recommend this company if you need a hard copy of a book that’s only available to you as a PDF.

| 7 | *A Quranic Miracle: The name Haman - Part 2*
This discovery is what led the French orientalist Maurice Bucaille to turn to the Quran, and, having coming across the name Haman, to contact an expert of hieroglyphics for more information regarding its origin and the historical figure. This expert explained that it was impossible for a 7th century text to contain the name Haman in the context of Ancient Egypt, since this was only discovered in the 19th century, and signposted Bucaille towards one of the most famous dictionaries of hieroglyphics by German Egyptologist Hermann Ranke. This dictionary mentioned the name Ha Amun as head of construction under the Pharaoh.
When Maurice Bucaille showed the aforementioned expert this name in the Quran, he was stunned and remained silent. This incident is what led Maurice Bucaille to eventually accept Islam.

| 8 | *A Quranic Miracle: The name Haman - Part 1*
Shaykh Hatim Al-Awni mentions the Quranic miracle of the name Haman, in relation to Musa (AS) and the Pharaoh. Haman is not mentioned in the Bible or Torah in the story of Musa (AS), rather, the Bible references a different Haman in the Book of Esther. This was used by some Bible scholars and orientalists as evidence for the fact that the Quran had erred and confused the figure of Haman from the Bible.
However, after the discovery of the Rosetta Stone and the subsequent work in translating the hieroglyphics, the name Haman appeared in the book “Rameside Inscriptions” by British archaeologist Kenneth A. Kitchen, transliterated as “Ḥmn-ḥ” meaning “One who can reach the God Amun”, who was the high priest and responsible for building projects at his time.

| 9 | NB: I have found no contemporary source confirming this anecdote about the Ḥijāz Railway. It seems to have appeared later. | 201 |
| 10 | Alḥamdulillāh, I was blessed with the opportunity to go for ʿUmrah, and after returning home, I thought I'd share some interesting spiritual anecdotes and advices that were shared with me in regards to al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah:
- When going for ziyārah, I was told that when the Ḥijāz Railway (built by the Ottomans) was being constructed, and the tracks being laid, the workers covered their hammers with leather, laid felt beneath the tracks, and used wooden sleepers instead of steel. The reason was to reduce the noise, so as not to cause any discomfort to Rasūlullāh ﷺ. Likewise I was advised when exiting the Masjid and putting on my footwear to not throw down my footwear with a slapping sound, but to place them gently.
- When going to give salām to Rasūlullāh ﷺ, try to give a little something in charity, to the cleaners, as a way of acting on the āyah: [Al-Mujādalah: 12]. Although the obligation of giving charity is abrogated, all are encouraged to spend 5/10 minutes to research the sabab al-nuzūl of this āyah.
- Regarding the practice of Shaykh Muḥammad Zakariyyā Kāndhlawī (author of فضائل الأعمال and أوجز المسالك), due to adab and haybah he would never offer salām from the front, but would instead offer from behind the platform of the aṣḥāb al-ṣuffah. He only offered salām from the front twice, both times with a descendant of Rasūlullāh ﷺ (Mawlānā Yūsuf Binnorī and Shaykh Ḥusayn Aḥmad Madanī). This practice was that of personal ḥayāʾ, maḥabbah and adab, not due to a fiqhī position that he held.

| 13 | An example of Imām Shāfi’ī weakening a ḥadīth in one chapter of al-Umm due to an unknown narrator, then coming back to it in a later written chapter and authenticating it, due to him now being aware of the narrators reliability.
There is a lesson in this, and I’ve also heard it from Shaykh ‘Abdullāh Al-Judai’, which is that when we finish any research, we should always go back to it later on and look over it again, in case we missed something or made an error. It could even be that we find new evidence or stronger arguments for our conclusion. What shouldn’t be the case however, is that we do it once and leave our conclusions there as if there is no room for improvement. Rather, we should always look to refine and improve our work, and even alter or retract our conclusions if need be.

| 14 | There is a common misconception amongst many students that, to be a mujtahid, one must know every single ḥadīth in existence. Imām Ibn Taymiyyah dispels that notion here, stating that if that was the case, then there is no mujtahid at all in the Ummah, as even the greatest Saḥābah like Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (Allāh is pleased with them all) were not aware of certain aḥādīth.
رفع الملام عن الأئمة الأعلام لابن تيمية صـ ١٠٣
That aside, one only needs to open the chapter on ijtihād in an uṣūl al-fiqh text to find that, though the conditions are high, they are not as astronomical of an impossibility as some make it out to be. After all, the conditions for ijtihād themselves are a product of ijtihād :)

| 17 | Shaykh Ḥasan Bukhārīs findings in this particular chapter are quite interesting, as he demonstrates with istiqrāʾ of Sharḥ Mushkil al-Āthār that Ṭaḥāwīs understanding and application of takhṣīṣ al-ʿām in this work, was in line with the majority of Uṣūliyyūn rather than the Ḥanafī Uṣūliyyūn, who are much more restrictive in their definition and conditions for takhṣīṣ.

| 19 | People sometimes apologise to me for asking a lot of questions. To be quite honest, I love questions, as it makes me either research and read up on topics and ideas that I probably wouldn’t have done otherwise, or revise what I learnt in the past.
For example, this morning, I was asked about the authenticity of a ḥadīth related to tawassul (asking from Allāh through an intermediary). This led me to look not only into the report that I was asked about, but out of interest from the first ḥadīth, I ended up looking into a few other aḥādīth related to the topic, then read parts of two treatises written on the subject, which eventually led to me flicking through and reading a couple of Imām Zāhid al-Kawtharīs other Maqālāt as well because I had the book already opened.
Moral of the story is, questions are beneficial for the one asking as well as the one being asked, so we shouldn’t avoid answering them when we are asked. This is also how some scholars understood Imām al-Bukhārīs statement to his student, Imām al-Tirmidhī: ما انتفعت بك أكثر مما انتفعت بي I.e. Bukhārī benefited immensely from Tirmidhīs constant questions more than Tirmidhī himself.

| 20 | Travelling to the Ḥaramayn over the last few weeks meant that we were not active on social media. Alḥamdulillāh, we are now back, and will be sharing some reflections in due course, but one that we wanted to share here first, is that travelling is never an excuse to neglect seeking knowledge.
Despite travelling with my family and toddler, as well as being ill for half of the trip, Alḥamdulillāh, I was still able to get a decent amount of reading and writing done. This is not to blow my own trumpet, but to emphasise that it is possible. With the right intention, discipline and use of time, we can continue seeking knowledge wherever we are.
This is especially noteworthy as we are in the summer holidays, where, we all have more time, but are also more prone to travelling and outings with family. There is still roughly two weeks left before the new academic year kicks off. If you haven’t used the holidays productively up until now, there is still time left, so make a study schedule and get to it!
