Bulgaria’s foreign minister has said Sofia will oppose EU sanctions targeting the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, describing them as “counterproductive.”
Those potential sanctions include restrictions on Patriarch Kirill, who the EU argues has "consistently justified and supported Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine." The bloc proposes that Kirill be subject to financial penalties and travel bans.
Kirill has been a vocal supporter of President Vladimir Putin’s conservative agenda and has described the invasion of Ukraine as a “holy war.”
