📍Located in Ethiopia's Danakil Depression, it is the world's lowest subaerial volcano. It may not be tall, but beauty isn't measured by height. Dallol is famous for its colorful hydrothermal springs, highly acidic pools, and spectacular salt formations in shades of yellow, green, white, and orange.

Not quite. This is one of the world's most fascinating natural phenomena.
📍Near the Brazilian 🇧🇷 city of Manaus, the dark waters of the Rio Negro meet the muddy Solimões River. Surprisingly, they do not mix immediately. Instead, they flow side by side for about 7 km (4.3 miles), creating a sharp boundary known as the Meeting of Waters.
The reason lies in the rivers' different physical properties. They have different temperatures, densities, flow velocities, and sediment loads.
The Solimões is about 6°C colder, flows much faster, and carries large amounts of suspended sediment, giving it its muddy brown color. The Rio Negro is warmer, slower, and rich in dissolved organic matter, which gives it its distinctive dark appearance. | 79 |

| 10 | Would you try pizza baked on an active volcano? 🌋🍕
In Guatemala, you can do exactly that on 📍Pacaya Volcano.
Instead of a traditional oven, the pizza is cooked using the intense heat from volcanic rocks and fresh lava. The cooks wear protective goggles and heat-resistant gloves—otherwise, they might end up roasting alongside the pizza.
And yes, the risk is real. Pacaya is an active volcano, and unexpected bursts of lava and volcanic gases can happen at any time.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can visit the volcano as part of a guided tour. The experience typically costs around $200 and includes the chance to watch your pizza bake on one of the hottest "ovens" on Earth. | 271 |
| 11 | The Russian "Mummy" Paint. Was it really made from ancient mummies?
Mummy Brown was a historical pigment made by grinding the dried remains of ancient Egyptian mummies together with the resins used in the embalming process. From the 16th century until the early 20th century, artists in Europe used this unusual pigment to create warm, transparent brown tones.
The practice became especially popular during the Victorian era, when the trade in Egyptian antiquities was booming. As demand for the pigment grew, countless mummies were bought, ground into powder, and sold to artists.
❌ BUT The famous artist's pigment made from Egyptian mummies was not the same as the Russian paint called "mummy."
The confusion comes from the name.
🤍 In the ♥️♥️th and ♥️♥️th centuries, Russian builders and craftsmen used a red mineral pigment known as mummy. Unlike the British Mummy Brown, it contained no human remains. Instead, it was made from naturally occurring iron-rich clay, where tiny particles of hematite (Fe₂O₃) gave the pigment its deep red color.
The paint was inexpensive, durable, and resistant to weather, making it a popular choice for wooden houses, fences, roofs, and farm buildings across the Russian Empire.
🤍So why did both pigments have the same name?
No one knows for certain. Historians believe the Russian name was simply a traditional trade term that became attached to a local iron-earth pigment. In Britain, however, Mummy Brown literally contained powdered Egyptian mummies mixed with embalming resins—a practice that continued until the early 20th century.

Every last Tuesday of the month, when the museum is closed to visitors, the staff transforms into a team of professional cleaners. First, they have to open every single display case – and there are ♥️♥️♥️ of them! Armed with cleaning supplies, the team meticulously goes through every shelf and every exhibit.
And that's how the cleaning passes by, quietly and unnoticed – so that when you visit the museum, you can see the exhibits in all their glory. | 118 |
| 18 | In 1964, a powerful geyser was created by accident during well drilling in the 📍Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada
Boiling water brought minerals to the surface, which formed a pedestal‑like mound with a small fountain on top. The geyser is covered in thermophilic algae that thrive in hot, wet environments. It is these algae that give the geyser its many shades of green and red, striking visitors with their bright colours.
🏜️The geyser sits on a private ranch and has an owner. It is hidden from view by a tall fence and locked gates with spikes. Occasionally, tourist groups are allowed onto the protected property, but most of the time you can only admire it from the road. | 97 |

The most valuable specimens display a full spectrum of rainbow colours with clear, distinct patterns — something that geological conditions at Lightning Ridge produce better than anywhere else. The vibrant play-of-colour is created by an optical effect called diffraction: microscopic silica spheres inside the stone break white light into individual colours, creating a dazzling kaleidoscope of shifting hues. | 96 |
