Canada’s official geographical names database continues to list the shared body of water as Lake Ontario and Lac Ontario.
So beneath today’s political theatre is a much older story about Indigenous language, European mapmaking and a name that survived empires, borders and Confederation.

| 2 |  The argument over Lake Ontario’s name gets especially interesting once you realize the word “Ontario” was around centuries before either modern Canada or the United States existed.
Canadian government sources trace the name to an Indigenous Iroquoian linguistic origin, although the precise translation varies between references from “sparkling water” to “vast body of water.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed to the Wendat form “Ontari’io” today and said the name is more than 400 years old.
The name was already being recorded in the 1600s, long before the international border through the lake was established and long before Ontario became a province in 1867.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order today directing U.S. federal agencies to replace “Lake Ontario” with “Lake America” in American federal geographic records within 30 days.
That order governs U.S. federal naming practice and does not require Canada to adopt the new name. | 12 |

| 4 | The debate never resolved until Lester B. Pearson made it a priority after becoming Prime Minister in 1963. Pearson was deeply committed to a flag that would represent Canada as an independent, multicultural, bilingual nation. He announced a competition for flag designs in 1964 and personally favoured a design featuring three red maple leaves and blue vertical stripes, which was immediately and widely ridiculed as the Pearson Pennant. What followed was the Great Canadian Flag Debate, a six-month argument in Parliament that consumed extraordinary energy and produced enormous heat. Former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker led the opposition to any change, insisting that the Red Ensign honoured the British heritage of English Canada. Pearson and his supporters insisted that Canada needed a flag that could represent all Canadians, including the large francophone population for whom the Union Jack carried no particular meaning. | 15 |

Canada became a self-governing Dominion on July 1 1867 but for 98 years it flew variants of British flags rather than one of its own. The Canadian Red Ensign, a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper left quarter and the Canadian coat of arms in the fly, had been used since the late 19th century and was recognised internationally as Canada's flag, but it had never been formally proclaimed as such and it prominently featured the symbol of British identity rather than Canadian identity. | 17 |  Yorkdale, Toronto (1965)
This photograph captures the Yorkdale area of Toronto in 1965, around the time when the rapidly growing suburban district was emerging as an important retail destination. Yorkdale Shopping Centre had opened that same year and represented a major change in the way Torontonians shopped and travelled. The development was closely connected to Toronto's expanding suburban population and the growing importance of automobile travel. Large roads and parking areas were designed to accommodate shoppers arriving from across the city and surrounding communities. The area around Yorkdale was considerably less developed than it is today, with the shopping centre becoming an important landmark in the city's northern landscape. The opening of Yorkdale helped establish a new model of suburban retailing in Toronto. This historic view captures the area during the early days of a development that would grow into one of Canada's best-known shopping destinations.
