Introduction Hello everyone! On one of the previous lectures Dr.Wayne asked a question who works more : men or women? And immediately answered that men work more. That question caught my attention, so I made a little research. Just to clarify upfront : I’m not arguing with the teacher. Аccording to official statistics, he’s right. At the end of 2025, 77,6% of men were employed, compared with 72,4% of women, leaving a 5,2-percentage-point gap [House of Commons Library, 2026]. However, it remains the smallest gap on record : ten years ago it was twice as wide. I'm trying to make a different point though : show a wider picture. As future economists, it's important to understand what work really is. Official statistics are useful, but they don’t reflect the full situation. The analysts at the parliamentary library themselves acknowledge this. They warn that in recent years the data from the UK’s main employment survey have become less reliable because of falling response rates, and should therefore be treated with more caution than usual. There are two caveats I should mention here. First of all, the shadow economy and illegal sectors will inevitably come up in this discussion. Secondly, original question considered only the 25-35 age group, but data with this group is very limited. So we’ll focus primarily on broader trends. Point 1. Invisible labour Invisible labour stands for unpaid, undervalued or unseen work, families and society can't function without. The most obvious example is housework(housewifes' work) : no payments, no benefits. How big is that contribution? The ONS estimated the value of unpaid domestic work at around 56% of GDP(gross domestic product, ввп). It would be unprofessional to ignore a figure like that. And this work is distributed unevenly. Women spend an average of 26 hours a week on it, men 16 - meaning women do 60% more unpaid work. And now for the key point for our topic : women aged 26–35, the very age group from the original question, do more unpaid work than any other age group - almost 35 hours a week on average. This is a global pattern : according to the United Nations, women worldwide spend 2.5 times as many hours per day on unpaid care as men. All of this is reflected in official employment statistics as well. 1.3 million British women are economically inactive specifically because they are caring for family or home [House of Commons Library]. 37% of employed women work part-time, compared with 14% of men. Women account for the majority of part-time workers in almost every professional group. Invisible work also affects earnings. In the 20s and early 30s, the pay gap is almost non-existent. After 40, it widens noticeably, and the Institute for Fiscal Studies links this to having children. Seven years after the first child, mothers earn on average less than half of what fathers earn. For men, having a child has almost no effect on earnings. This leads to the question : how many men would be officially employed if they didn't have someone at home taking care of their basic needs - food, a clean home, comfort, and emotional support? What would the statistics look like then? Point 2. Informal and illegal work There are no precise figures here : this is a grey area. We don’t even know how many people work informally. But we can look at adjacent/neighbouring areas of employment and use them to identify trends. Let’s start with vulnerable but legal employment : zero-hours contracts. According to the TUC, women are 34% more likely than men to work on such contracts, and more likely to remain on them for over a year : 69% of women versus 64% of men. Among women from ethnic minorities, the share is even higher : 4.7%, compared with 2.4% for white men. These contracts are legal, but the worker doesn't know how much they will earn next week. And when you are caring for children or elderly relatives, that instability is especially hard. These are the very responsibilities from the previous block. Now illegal sectors. The fact that they are outside the law does not mean there is no supply and demand. It only means that the state doesn't control this area and doesn't protect those who work in it. There is no data on the number of people employed there, but I propose that we recognise it as work : services and products for which there is demand and which affect the economy. Whether it is the shadow economy or not, it is important to account for it, and no one counts it in official statistics. I should also say a few words about human trafficking. This is no longer work but a crime against the person. According to the UN, for every 10 identified victims worldwide, there are about five adult women and two girls, and most women and girls end up in sexual exploitation. These are only identified cases - no one knows how many there really are. Keep this in mind when you think about the five percentage points in favour of men. Point 3. Universal Credit Here is an interesting fact. Women make up 58% of Universal Credit recipients, a record since it was introduced in 2013. Until mid-2018, men were the majority of recipients. The turning point came because UC replaced benefits that women were more likely to receive. Today, women are the majority in every category of recipients except one : “looking for work.” Among pensioners receiving Pension Credit, two-thirds are women [DWP, 2025]. This does not fit well with the picture in which it is mainly men who work. Point 4. Conclusion I want to critique the simplified approach to this question. When we talk about employment, it is important to understand what we call work. This concept is much broader than official statistics. It determines how we build business models, how we see the structure of the economy, and in what direction we expect it to develop. I am not saying this for the sake of argument. As a future economist, I cannot ignore the need for a more accurate approach to data. So, what have we seen? Men are indeed more often in formal employment, but women do noticeably more unpaid work, especially at the age of 26–35. They are more likely to work part-time and on unstable contracts. A significant part of women’s work simply does not appear in official statistics.
