Repost from Germanic Paganism
Solmōnaþ Sol-month was an important month in the Anglo-Saxon calendar. Some folks interpret this month as being centered around the veneration of the sun. But the Old English word sol is used in many texts as a word for ‘mud’ or ‘dirt’. Suggesting that crops were sowed during this month following the end of winter. It seems it was a common practice to bake “hearth cakes” and bury them for Sunne or Mother Earth on the full moon of Solmōnaþ. This likely played a part in the evolution of the meaning for Solmōnaþ. With the month becoming known as “Cake-month” or “The Month of Cakes”. The Solmōnaþ full moon is on February 24th. Go bake some cakes for Mother Earth!

Germanic cultures usually practiced hunting and farming throughout the warmer periods. Primarily living off of crops, wild game, and fish. While the livestock animals served as assets to their properties and families. Some livestock animals sustainably produced bi-products like milk or eggs. While others were simply used for pulling heavy weight or riding. The functions livestock performed, held far greater value than potential meat harvests. This explains why animal sacrifice was such a high form of praise. It wasn’t just the sacrifice of an animal’s life, it was the sacrifice of an asset to your family or community. But it needed to be done, for the veneration of our Gods and for survival. If you scrutinize the ways of our ancestors, you will surely find practical purpose behind them. In this day and age. Sacrificing healthy animals for our Gods and consumption, is still very practical. If done right, animal sacrifice will save your grocery money and provide you with ethically sourced healthy meat.
