The Osun State Police Command has launched a statewide operation targeting vehicles and motorcycles using covered, concealed, altered, defaced, unauthorised, or unregistered number plates as part of efforts to improve security across the state.
According to the command, the exercise is being carried out in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police and is designed to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of anonymous vehicle identities while committing offences.
In a statement released in Osogbo, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, has instructed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and other officers across the state to seize vehicles found violating the regulations and ensure appropriate investigations are conducted in accordance with the law.
The police noted that the operation is intended to strengthen public safety, improve crime detection, and make it more difficult for criminals to evade identification.
Authorities also warned that vehicles displaying fake, tampered, illegally obtained, or otherwise invalid registration plates would be subjected to enforcement measures.
The Command advised motorists, commercial transport operators, fleet managers, and vehicle owners to ensure that all vehicles on the road carry genuine, properly registered, and clearly visible number plates at all times.
Police officials emphasized that the exercise is not aimed at harassing law-abiding citizens but rather at enhancing the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate criminal activities, track suspects, and reinforce the overall security framework within Osun State. The Command further assured residents that officers involved in the operation have been directed to carry out their duties professionally and within the confines of the law while urging members of the public to cooperate and provide useful information that could assist security agencies.
