What is photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is a biochemical process used by plants, algae, and some bacteria to convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy in the form of glucose (a type of sugar). This process is crucial for life on Earth as it provides the primary source of energy for nearly all living organisms and releases oxygen as a byproduct. ▎The Process of Photosynthesis Photosynthesis generally occurs in two main stages: 1. Light-dependent Reactions: These reactions take place in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts and require sunlight. During this stage:    • Light energy is captured by chlorophyll (the green pigment in plants).    • Water molecules are split (photolysis), releasing oxygen as a byproduct.    • Energy from light is used to convert ADP and NADP+ into the energy carriers ATP and NADPH. 2. Light-independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle): These reactions occur in the stroma of chloroplasts and do not directly require light. Instead, they use the ATP and NADPH produced in the light-dependent reactions to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere into glucose through a series of enzymatic reactions. ▎Where Photosynthesis Occurs • In Plants: Photosynthesis primarily occurs in the leaves of plants, specifically within specialized cell structures called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, which captures light energy.   • In Algae: Similar to plants, algae also contain chloroplasts and perform photosynthesis in their cells. • In Certain Bacteria: Some bacteria, such as cyanobacteria, can also perform photosynthesis. They have pigments that allow them to capture light energy, although they do not have chloroplasts. Overall, photosynthesis is essential for producing organic compounds that serve as food for plants and other organisms, forming the base of the food chain, and contributing to the Earth's oxygen supply.
