External Casing Packer with DV is utilized to reduce NPT during well cementing. These equipment allows to execute the cementing job in one job. How is that ? After pumping and displacing the first stage cement slurry, the packer will be set by pressure which provides a solid base to hold the hydrostatic pressure above it. That means the DV could be opened and the second stage cement slurry could pumped. #Ahmed_Ezhairi

In one of the fields the surface section is drilled using the blind drilling method due to severe caverns . This presents a major challenge during the cementing of the surface casing. To ensure cement returns to the surface, two cement baskets are used. What Happened? During the cementing job execution, no cement returns were observed at the surface, which is considered a bad indicator. As a result, four top jobs were performed, pumping over 30 m³ of cement slurry until returns were finally observed at the surface—noting that the original cement volume for the top job was approximately 8 m³. Failure Analysis To ensure cement returns to the surface, two cement baskets were run: one was placed between the conductor pipe and the surface casing, while the other was set in the open hole. By experience, this setup had succeeded multiple times in the past. However, it failed this time primarily due to the failure of the cement basket placed inside the annulus between the casings to provide a solid base to hold the cement slurry column. This failure resulted in three additional secondary cementing operations and a loss of 2 rig days.

To calculate the required thickening time for a cement slurry, apply the following equation: Thickening time = mixing and pumping time + dropping wiper plug time + displacement time + safety time (1–2 hours). #Ahmed_Ezhairi

The cementing program should show the standoff ratio of the casing to make sure the casing is centralized, which leads to good cement bond quality. The figure below shows the real standoff ratio for 13 3/8" casing with 49 different types of centralizers. Do you think the ratio meets the requirements? #Ahmed_Ezhairi

What measures should be taken in the event of gas migration during well cementing? 🛢️ The recommended solution is a Cement Anti-Gas Migration and Gas Block Agent. This advanced additive effectively prevents gas migration, ensuring a reliable seal and enhancing the integrity of cement barriers in oil and gas wells. #Ahmed_Ezhairi
