It was the result of lengthy negotiations led by Count Sava Raguzinsky-Vladislavich. The treaty regulated the border and trade: Russia was permitted to send a caravan to Beijing every three years, and duty-free border trade was opened in Kyakhta and Zurukhaitu. This laid the foundation for the city’s rise. 🏙️ Two cities, one border The unique feature was that directly opposite stood the Chinese trading settlement of Maimachen—meaning, roughly, “trading city.” It was located in what is now the Mongolian town of Altanbulag, which at the time belonged to the Qing Empire. Thus, an extraordinary pair emerged: a Russian and a Chinese settlement that were closely interconnected economically. Chinese seaports opened to international trade, and the sea route became faster and cheaper—especially after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The Trans-Siberian Railway and the Chinese Eastern Railway brought the final turning point: the major flows of goods now bypassed Kyakhta. The former hub of Russian-Chinese trade lost its importance—what remained was a small border town whose old merchants’ houses and churches still recall the time when a significant part of the trade between Russia and China was conducted here.
