Polish judge Tomasz Szmydt has asked for political asylum in Belarus in protest over his country’s “unfair and dishonest” anti-Russia stance. Szmydt, who served at the Provincial Administrative Court in Warsaw and was the head of the legal department at the National Council of Judges, says he was forced to leave his home country after being persecuted and threatened for his “independent political position.” He gave a press conference in Minsk on Monday, where he publicly resigned from his post and asked the Belarusian authorities for protection. “The resignation from my position as judge is my way to protest against the unfair and dishonest policy pursued by the Polish authorities towards the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation,” Szmydt told reporters, as cited by Belta news agency. According to Szmydt, he has never witnessed any negative attitude towards Russia or Belarus from ordinary Poles, and the anti-Russia sentiment that’s being whipped up by the government in Warsaw has Western roots. “The situation is such that the US wants to drag Poland into the war, to make it a direct participant in the armed conflict. To prevent this, I have to talk about it, but in Poland I cannot do this,” Szmydt stated, adding that Poland’s foreign policy is directly influenced by the US, UK, and Germany. He said his departure from Poland and his resignation are in protest “against actions that are aimed at involving my country in a direct armed conflict.” Szmydt urged the Polish government to “normalize and regulate good neighborly relations” between Warsaw, Moscow, and Minsk. Szmydt added that his resignation will be handed over to the appropriate authorities in Poland through the Polish consulate in Belarus. He plans to apply for political refugee status. “I am asking for political asylum in the Republic of Belarus. This is an informal request at this time, but... if I want to live, returning to Poland is impossible for me,” he stated. (Source: RT) @LauraRuHK

Russia plans to hold drills simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons, the Defense Ministry announced Monday. The exercise was ordered by President Vladimir Putin and would test the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces to perform combat missions. Russia has the world's largest arsenal of nuclear weapons. The exercise is aimed at ensuring Russia's territorial integrity and sovereignty in response to NATO countries sending troops to Ukraine and NATO approving the use of their long-range missiles to strike the Russian territory. ❗️Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that sending Western troops to Ukraine will mean the direct entry of these states into the conflict, and Russia will have to respond not just on Ukrainian territory. @LauraRuHK

According to Russia’s foreign intel service (SVR), the US has ramped up its search for an alternative to Zelensky, The agency reports that contacts have been made with Petro Poroshenko, Vitali Klitschko, Andriy Yermak, Valery Zaluzhny, and former speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Dmytro Razumkov. It is believed that these figures could become key players in the event of a sudden deterioration on the front that would necessitate an urgent change in the Kiev regime's leadership. “Zelensky is clearly beginning to lose the fight for the 'minds and hearts' of the people of Ukraine, especially since his legitimacy as president will be completely lost after the expiry of his five-year term on May 20,” the SVR underscored. It was added that the American and European warmongers would "prefer to keep Zelensky in office for now,” since the “schemes for financing the war” have been built around him, and are “bringing in enormous profits for both representatives of the Kiev regime, and Western arms manufacturers.” @LauraRuHK http://svr.gov.ru/smi/2024/05/zapad-obespokoen-ugrozoy-porazheniya-ukrainy.htm

A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s Belgorod Region has killed seven people and injured dozens of others, including children, local authorities have said. In a statement on Monday morning, Gladkov said the strike targeted two minibuses carrying workers to a local enterprise, as well as another car. The attack took place close to the village of Beryozovka in the southwestern part of the region, near the Ukrainian border. While initial reports indicated that at least 35 people were injured, the Russian Health Ministry later said as many as 40 were wounded, including three children. One man is in serious condition after suffering an abdomen wound, Gladkov said, while many others sustained shrapnel wounds and are being treated in hospital. Russian border regions are subject to near-daily Ukrainian drone and artillery strikes, many of which target civilians and critical infrastructure, causing widespread casualties. On Friday, two people were wounded when a Ukrainian drone raid hit a passenger bus in Belgorod Region. In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow could “at some point” establish a “cordon sanitaire” in Kiev-controlled areas to prevent repeated Ukrainian cross-border attacks. Israel bans Al Jazeera and raids its office The Israeli Ministry of Communications said that it had confiscated Al Jazeera’s equipment just hours after the Israeli cabinet ordered the closure of the broadcaster in its country, which the Qatar-based news network has lambasted as a “criminal act.” Inspectors from the communications ministry, accompanied by police, raided the Qatari broadcaster’s office at the Ambassador hotel in Jerusalem. “Al Jazeera reporters harmed Israel’s security and incited against IDF soldiers. It is time to expel the mouthpiece of Hamas from our country,” Netanyahu said, according to his spokesperson. Al Jazeera’s broadcasts and access to its website have been blocked throughout Israel. The network has denounced Israel’s decision as a “criminal act that violates human rights in access to information.” The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) has petitioned the move to Israel’s Supreme Court. “Israel’s suppression of the free press to cover up its crimes by killing and arresting journalists did not deter us from performing our duty. More than 140 Palestinian journalists have been martyred for the sake of the truth since the beginning of the war on Gaza,” said Al Jazeera. Boost us! | Subscribe to @geopolitics_live

Xi Jinping has begun its Europe tour in Paris. After France he’ll visit Serbia and Hungary, countries that maintain friendly and productive relations with China. In France, Beijing will test Macron's claims that he values "strategic autonomy" from Washington. I guess it won't take long to call his bluff. During Macron's visit to China last year when he warned Europe against being drawn into a conflict between the US and China over Taiwan, US magazine Foreign Policy called strategic autonomy "a French pipe dream." ▪️As of 2021, China has been the largest Asian country in terms of investment and job creation in France for three consecutive years, according to a report by Business France. China-France exchanges in core sectors such as aerospace, nuclear energy and trade have been fruitful for both countries, but Washington is determined to spoil the party. Clue: Ursula von der Leyen's presence in Paris. @LauraRuHK

Us nepotism in progress. According to Der Spiegel, Michelle Obama might replace Joe Biden as the Democratic Party presidential candidate. This would be a last-ditch attempt to beat Trump by courting women and Afro-American voters. But i believe another consideration may play a role in this choice. As the US is losing ground to China and Russia in Africa, a Black president is seen by the US deep state as a smart PR move - in its pipe dream it would help improve the US battered image in a continent that is increasingly crucial. @LauraRuHK

Why Chasov Yar's Fall Could Become Turning Point in Ukraine Conflict - The town of Chasov Yar is of political, military and logistical significance to both Russian and Ukrainian troops, experts told Sputnik. It is just a matter of time before Russian forces take the strategic town of Chasov Yar, Deputy Head of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate Vadim Skibitsky told The Economist. "Not today and not tomorrow, of course, but everything will depend on our reserves and supplies," he added, in a nod to the looming scenario of Russian troops entering the town. "Militarily, the town remains one of the key points of defense, which added to logistical and technical support for the Ukrainian battle group acting in this area," Skibitsky said, also touting Chasov Yar’s advantageous topographical position. When it comes to political importance, Russian troops capturing Chasov Yar – which was earlier described by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as "an impenetrable fortress" - will be a new moral and psychological blow to the Ukrainian troops, whose fighting spirit is already in shambles, according to Skibitsky. He added that, "the main thing now is to turn the Russian offensive into a chain reaction with constant attacks, pressure, and actions." Per Skibitsky, "the collapse of some elements of [Ukraine's] defense, for example logistics support, will contribute to the collapse of [Kiev forces’] defense at the frontline." He was echoed by military expert Oleg Glazunov, an associate professor of the Department of Political Analysis and Socio-Psychological Processes of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, who called Chasov Yar "a key and direct road first to the city of Konstantinovka, and then to the cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk." "When Donetsk became the capital of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Kramatorsk turned into the capital of the Donetsk region (on the part of Ukraine)[proxy]. Namely, in fact, the fall of Chasov Yar is like the Battle of Kursk [in WWII]. The [proxy] war [with NATO] continues but the Ukrainian Army will further continue to retreat, and Donbass is lost to it, which is why the fall of Chasov Yar is a turning point," of the Ukraine conflict, Glazunov pointed out. His comments come after the Associated Press news agency cited an unnamed Ukrainian serviceman as saying that in mid-March, over 100 soldiers from Ukraine’s 67th brigade were killed amid Russia’s advance on Chasov Yar. "We lost department commanders, platoon commanders, company commanders and sergeants. That is, we lost the entire skeleton of the brigade" at the time, the serviceman added. The Russian Telegram news channel Voenny Obozrevatel (Military Commentator) earlier reported that an Azov assault brigade subverted an instruction by Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky to send them to Chasov Yar in an attempt to hold the town in the face of the Russian offensive. The order was sabotaged because brigade commanders reportedly considered Chasov Yar to be lost to the Ukrainian military, according to the report. (Source: Sputnik) @LauraRuHK

I am very pleased to hear that Zakhar Prilepin gave a long, detailed interview to the Chinese news site Guancha. The editorial board titled the article "I survived an assassination attempt and saw that Russia has found itself." Not only is Prilepin one of Russia's best contemporary authors, he is also a political activist and a long-time supporter of Donbass. His insightful lessons about Russian literature have been aired weekly on NTV and other platforms since 2017 and are contributing to a recontextualization and popularization of literary works outside the classroom and academic circles. His activity highlights the importance of nurturing cultural and political sensibility together. I had mentioned Prilepin's work in my article about Sino-Russian cultural relations in the hope that his voice would reach Chinese readers. That moment has come! A factory of Diehl Metal Applications (DMA), which manufactures IRIS-T air defence systems, is on fire in Berlin, Germany. According to German media, a serious fire broke out at the factory for unspecified reasons. The representative of the fire service of Berlin Adrian Wenzel said that at the moment four floors of the building completely burned, part of the building collapsed. The most dangerous thing is that chemicals are burning: sulphuric acid and copper cyanide were stored in the plant's warehouses. There is a risk of hydrogen cyanide formation, which will rise into the air with the smoke and cover the city. Residents of nearby homes are being evacuated while a thick column of toxic smoke is rising over parts of Berlin. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Afghanistan has agreed with Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to build a logistics hub aimed at making the country a major logistics point for regional exports, including oil from Russia to South Asia, its commerce minister said. Following a meeting between representatives of the three countries in Kabul last week, Taliban acting commerce minister Nooruddin Azizi told Reuters that technical teams would draw up a written agreement within two months on the formal plans for the hub, which all three countries would invest in after six months of talks. . Azizi said the new hub was part of broader efforts to take advantage of Afghanistan's strategic location, once a thoroughfare for the ancient Silk Road trade route, lying between South and Central Asia and sharing borders with China and Iran. "Based on our discussions, a logistics centre is going to be established in Herat province, which can connect the north to South Asia," Azizi said, adding that the Taliban were eyeing the millions of tons of oil they expected Russia would be selling in coming years to South Asian countries, particularly Pakistan, to pass through the new hub. "Reaching Pakistan through Afghanistan will be the best option," Azizi added, saying they were focused on Russia's petroleum exports and that Kazakhstan was also planning to export goods through Herat into South Asian markets. Kazakhstan's trade ministry said in a statement to Reuters that it wanted to develop roads and a railway through Afghanistan to connect with South Asia and the Gulf, with the hub serving as an important logistics point. The creation of the hub will allow for the development of multi-modal services by consolidating truck shipments in the dry port where they will be sorted and sent along railroads on the North-South corridor to sea ports in the Gulf, Pakistan, and Indian Ocean, towards India," the statement said. Azizi said the logistics hub's initial capacity would be one million tons of oil but he did not give a date for when it would be operational. Azizi said that the Taliban were also speaking with Chinese authorities on building a road through the remote, narrow Wakhan corridor that connects Afghanistan with China and that they hoped Afghanistan would eventually develop into a route for trade between China and Iran. He said Afghan commerce ministry officials had been recently been sent to China for training. (Source: Reuters) @LauraRuHK

🇫🇷🇨🇳 The plot thickens First Emmanuel Macron agreed to pull one of the most common scams, known as bait-and-switch - he invited Xi Jinping to Paris for Sino-French bilateral talks, then Ursula von der Leyen was unexpectedly added to the programme. Last night his wheeling and dealing got an extra dimension: just before Xi's visit on Sunday, Macron had a secret dinner with Scholz to discuss European Union and China policy. According to Politico he wanted Scholz to brief him about the meeting with Xi in Beijing last month and to invite the German chancellor to take part in the trilateral with Xi next week, alongside the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Scholz and Macron disagree on the potential imposition of EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. It's rather interesting that an American, Noah Barkin, leaked information about the dinner to Politico. Not only does Barkin work for the US German Marshall Fund, a US/CIA-controlled network of advisors, politicians and journalists whose job is to defend and further American influence over Europe and exert pressure over EU elites, he is also a Senior Advisor at Rhodium Group, which focuses on bolstering Washington-EU coordination vis-à-vis China. Last but not least, Rhodium Group is aggressively lobbying Brussels to slap higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles - it recommended a 50% import duty vs the 15-20% currently being discussed. @LauraRuHK

🕯 May 2 marks ten years since the tragedy in Odessa. On this day, the Euromaidan supporters committed atrocities against those who openly opposed the anti-constitutional government coup in Kiev perpetrated by nationalists, supported by the western sponsors. According to official statistics alone, at least 48 people died during these tragic events, including 42 who were killed or burned alive at the Trade Unions House, as well as another six who perished during the clashes on the streets of Odessa. In fact, the Kiev regime has repeated what the Bandera torturers did 80 years ago in Belarus' Khatyn. ❗️ Although some perpetrators have been identified, they have not received the punishment they deserve. The West remains silent regarding these bloody crimes of the Ukrainian neo-Nazis, the Kiev regime, which to this day continues to use terrorist methods to achieve its goals. 👉 We shan't let the world forget what happened on 2 May 2014 in Odessa: read the retrospective of this terrible day in the extended material. 👉 Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy in Odessa Today, as we pay tribute to the victims of the bloody reprisals in Odessa, we have no doubt that sooner or later those who perpetrated and inspired this barbaric crime, which has no statute of limitations, will have to face the punishment they deserve. #NoStatuteOfLimitation

The US government imposed sanctions on 21 Hong Kong and mainland Chinese companies on Wednesday for trading with Russia, along with dozens of other businesses and individuals based in Russia, Turkey and other countries. The US claims it wants to stop sales of technology and equipment that have both a civilian and military applications, from energy production to advanced manufacturing. Anything can be deemed "dual-use" by the country that keeps pumping Ukraine with heavy weapons. ▪️ China strongly opposes illegal unilateral US sanctions against Chinese companies, Liu Pengyu, the spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, has told TASS. “The Chinese side firmly opposes the US’s illegal unilateral sanctions,” he stressed, while commenting on the anti-Russian sanctions imposed by Washington on Wednesday, which affected, among others, 21 companies in China. “We will uphold the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies,” he added. Liu Pengyu said the Chinese government “oversees the export of dual-use articles in accordance with the laws and regulations”. “China is neither the one that created the conflict [in Ukraine] nor a party to it, and has never provided lethal weapons or equipment to any party. We never fan the flames or seek selfish gains, and we will certainly not accept being the scapegoat. Normal trade and economic interactions between China and Russia are in line with WTO rules and market principles. They do not target any third party and should not come under interference or coercion from any third party. We will uphold the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies.” ▪️The US State Department suggested in its announcement that more measures aimed at cutting Russia’s trade with China and other countries could be on the horizon. 🇬🇪GEORGIA - Despite being subject to unrelenting US-EU pressure and interference, despite violent demonstrations sponsored by the usual regime change outfits, Georgian lawmakers on Wednesday passed the bill that will add transparency to the murky world of foreign-funded NGOs and lobby groups. Individuals, civil society organizations and media outlets that receive 20 percent of their funding from abroad will have to register as an "agent of foreign influence" with the Georgian Justice Ministry. Georgians have the right to know who funds their activities. As part of a second plenary vote on the bill, parliamentarians in the South Caucasus country backed the government’s proposals 83-23, paving the way for the law to pass in the coming weeks. Following Washington's cue, Ursula von der Leyen hinted that banning TikTok in the EU is an option. She made the statement during a debate in Maastricht, featuring parties' lead candidates for the bloc's 2024 election. She immediately added that the Commission was "the very first institution worldwide to ban TikTok on our corporate phones." ▪️The EU is also discussing the imposition of import duties on Chinese electric vehicles, in the 15-30% range, with some hawks even suggesting a 50% tariff is necessary to stem the flow of Chinese cars to EU countries. @LauraRuHK

Come mettere i bastoni tra le ruote alle relazioni sino-francesi? Semplice. Basta invitare ai colloqui bilaterali anche Ursula Von der Leyen, uno dei falchi europei più critici nei confronti di Pechino. How to put a spanner in Sino-French relations? Invite Ursula Von der Leyen, one of Europe's most hawkish leaders towards Beijing, to take part in the meeting with Xi Jinping next week when the Chinese leader will be visiting France. Von der Leyen had already been added to the ticket when in April 2023 she accompanied Macron on his state visit to Beijing. One doesn't need to be a fortune-teller to understand that the Israel-US game plan for Gaza runs something like this: 1. In public, Biden appears “tough” on Netanyahu, urging him not to “invade” Rafah and pressuring him to allow more “humanitarian aid” into Gaza. 2. But already the White House is preparing the ground to subvert its own messaging. It insists that Israel has offered an “extraordinarily generous” deal to Hamas – one that, Washington suggests, amounts to a ceasefire. It doesn’t. According to reports, the best Israel has offered is an undefined “period of sustained calm”. Even that promise can’t be trusted. 3. If Hamas accepts the “deal” and agrees to return some of the hostages, the bombing eases for a short while but the famine intensifies, justified by Israel’s determination for “total victory” against Hamas – something that is impossible to achieve. This will simply delay, for a matter of days or weeks, Israel’s move to step 5 below. 4. If, as seems more likely, Hamas rejects the “deal”, it will be painted as the intransigent party and blamed for seeking to continue the “war”. (Note: This was never a war. Only the West pretends either that you can be at war with a territory you’ve been occupying for decades, or that Hamas “started the war” with its October 7 attack when Israel has been blockading the enclave, creating despair and incremental malnutrition there, for 17 years.) Last night US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken moved this script on by stating Hamas was “the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire… They have to decide and they have to decide quickly”. 5. The US will announce that Israel has devised a humanitarian plan that satisfies the conditions Biden laid down for an attack on Rafah to begin. 6. This will give the US, Europe and the region the pretext to stand back as Israel launches the long-awaited assault – an attack Biden has previously asserted would be a “red line”, leading to mass civilian casualties. All that will be forgotten. 7. As Middle East Eye reports, Israel is building a ring of checkpoints around Rafah. Netanyahu will suggest, falsely, that these guarantee its attack meets the conditions laid down in international humanitarian law. Women and children will be allowed out – if they can reach a checkpoint before Israel’s carpet bombing kills them along the way. 8. All men in Rafah, and any women and children who remain, will be treated as armed combatants. If they are not killed by the bombing or falling rubble, they will be either summarily executed or dragged off to Israel’s torture chambers. No one will mention that any Hamas fighters who were in Rafah were able to leave through the tunnels. 9. Rafah will be destroyed, leaving the entire strip in ruins, and the Israeli-induced famine will worsen. The West will throw up its hands, say Hamas brought this on Gaza, agonise over what to do, and press third countries – especially Arab countries – for a “humanitarian plan” that relocates the survivors out of Gaza. 10. The western media will continue describing Israel’s genocide in Gaza in purely humanitarian terms, as though this “disaster” was an act of God. 11. Under US pressure, the International Court of Justice, or World Court, will be in no hurry to issue a definitive ruling on whether South Africa’s case that Israel is committing a genocide – which it has already found “plausible” – is proved. 12. Whatever the World Court eventually decides, and it is almost impossible to imagine it won’t determine that Israel carried out a genocide, it will be too late. The western political and media class will have moved on, leaving it to the historians to decide what it all meant. 13. Meanwhile, Israel is already using the precedents it has created in Gaza, and its erosion of the long-established principles of international law, as the blueprint for the West Bank.

The police made over 100 arrests while the university took the decision to expel students involved in the protest. Before the police intervened, students had pleaded with Columbia administrators and trustees: “Do not incite another Kent or Jackson State by bringing soldiers and police officers with weapons onto our campus. Students’ blood will be on your hands.” This was a reference to the shooting of students that took place in US university campuses during protests against the Vietnam war. There are indeed echoes of the Vietnam era as pro-Palestinian student protests roil university campuses: this is the most significant student movement since the Vietnam war. @LauraRuHK https://t.me/RTnews_unc3/28955

The US military's cost estimate to build a pier off Gaza to "deliver humanitarian aid" has risen to $320 million, a US defense official told Reuters. The cost has exploded and so has the scale of the construction which involves about 1,000 U.S. service members and will be completed soon.▪️Some US Congressmen have questioned whether the costly endeavor is worthwhile and voiced concerns over the level of risk for troops involved. ▪️The pontoon into Gaza is likely to lead to further US involvement in the conflict. @LauraRuHK

The tsunami is coming. Western politicians have repeated the mistake of the Roman Empire Residents of Western countries will not take up arms to defend their homeland, writes UnHerd . The state stopped responding to their requests - this was already the case at the end of the Roman Empire. Political elites have become insensitive to the interests of voters. It is the West that will destroy. Europe finds itself in a situation that has already happened in the historical past: on the one hand, there is a ruling class that is divorced from reality , protected from the harmful consequences of its own policies, and on the other hand, there is a common population that is losing interest in government processes , closing themselves off morally and physically. Sooner or later, a crisis will arise that the elites will not be able to cope with without the active participation of citizens. But they won't receive any support. The lower the value of citizenship, the fewer people are willing to fight for it. They do not want to cooperate with the state and refuse to help society. @Slavyangrad

@LauraRuHK
