Let's answer a common question.
The question is "What is your advice on using less common words?".
I've got a few things to say about this. Firstly, you need to understand the difference between informal, normal, less common, and fancy vocab. Let me explain.
Informal language:
This kind of vocabulary includes words and expressions that we use in speaking, but not in formal writing. Examples include words like 'you', 'get' (when not in a collocation), 'heaps', 'lots of', 'really', among others. Included in this is most idioms such as 'as quick as a flash', 'raining cats and dogs' and other such 'sayings'. Never use any of this vocabulary in your essays, though you can use them (if they are natural) in informal letters for General Task 1.
Normal language:
This kind of vocabulary should be the vast majority of your words. Most of what we say is covered in a few thousand words, so this should make up the bulk of your essay.
Less common language:
This kind of language includes words that not every non-native speaker would know. This includes collocations, which are groups of normal words used together naturally. However, - and this is super important - if you are from certain countries, your essay will have plenty of this language in it automatically.
If you are from places like Korea, Japan, Thailand etc, there is very little overlap of languages and very little interaction with less common words, even though there is some use of English nouns. If you are from these places, you may have to do some extra study to learn less common / topic specific vocabulary and make sure you put some in your essays.
However, if you are from India, Pakistan, the Middle East, Africa etc, there is a great deal of exposure to all kinds of English. In the case of the subcontinent, a lot of business, television and education are conducted in English, so students from these places often have a depth of less common vocabulary that is similar to a native speaker's. Also, if you are from Latin America or a Spanish speaking country, there is a tremendous amount of crossover with less common expressions. My point is that there will be no need for you guys to spice up your writing with less common vocabulary because you will already be using without realising. For you it won't feel less common.
Fancy language:
This is the kind of language that native speakers don't use although the words do exist. For example, I see students using 'To recapitulate' instead of 'In conclusion'. Honestly, I never even knew the word 'recapitulate' until I started reading essays from people largely in the subcontinent. Native speakers just never write this stuff. 'Opine' is another one of these. 99% of native speakers have never written this word.
The point is that your writing should not include fancy language. You should write like a native speaker, not beyond one.
Another point on this is that people from the regions I mentioned earlier (subcontinent / middle east / Africa) tend to have a habit of using rare words when a 'normal' word is the most natural. I assume it's something to do with the teaching practices that happen in that part of the world, but the most common advice I give to writers from these places is to simplify their vocabulary. It's almost always packed with too much 'fancy' and 'less common' (but unnatural) language and not enough 'normal' vocabulary.
I hope this gives you some insight on what vocab you should be using.

The Day of Arafah ☪
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
"On this day, Allah, the most Exalted, descends to the nearest heaven, and He is proud of His servants on the earth and says to those in heavens, look at My servants, they have come from far and near, with hair dishevelled and faces covered with dust, to seek my Mercy. Even if their sins are as much the sand or the froth of the sea, I shall forgive them."
