In the aftermath, local self-defense forces and grassroots councils formed to protect the community and build self-determination. For years, Shengal has been a zone of contested power between Baghdad, the Kurdistan Regional Government, militias, and Turkey. In the last few days, Iraqi army forces have set up a new checkpoint without prior coordination with local Yazidi security forces — raising fears of renewed tensions. This expansion comes amid regional pressures and diplomatic efforts to manage the disputed status of the area, but local voices fear that more militarization could undermine fragile stability. Shengal still symbolizes an ongoing struggle against genocide, external domination, and self-rule — where the fight is not just about security, but about political autonomy and dignity.

As internationalist we stand in solidarity with Aristotelis Chantzis and Prosfygika. This is not only about buildings. It is about defending spaces of self-organization, collective care, and resistance. Since 2010, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika has created 22 solidarity structures supporting health, education, food, culture, and vulnerable people. These structures represent real relationships and real protection for those who might otherwise be left alone. The attempt to degrade and gentrify Prosfygika serves private interests over human needs. Without the community’s care, these buildings would not still be standing as homes and spaces of dignity. We support this struggle because we believe in solidarity over isolation and collective responsibility over profit. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has announced the launch of the second phase of Operation Herof 2 across Balochistan, calling it a declaration of decisive resistance against the occupying state. In a statement, BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch said the operation targets all military and administrative structures. According to the BLA, coordinated attacks have been carried out in 10 cities, including Quetta, Nushki, Mastung, Dalbandin, Kalat, Kharan, Gwadar, Pasni, Tump and Buleda, disrupting enemy movement and forcing Pakistani troops to retreat in several areas. The BLA said the people of Balochistan are fighting for independence amid continued repression by Pakistani forces, including raids, unlawful arrests, enforced disappearances, the kill-and-dump policy, and fabricated cases, as repeatedly highlighted by Baloch human rights organisations.
