THE UNIVERSITY OF GOROKA COURSES TO BE ACCREDITED INTERNATIONALLY. •••••••••••••••••••••••••• By Brian J Loriko 09/06/2024 The University of Goroka is a state-run institution established right in the heart of Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province that offers different courses. The three-day workshop was held last Monday and ended on Wednesday with highlights of how the Institute of Distance and Flexible Learning Centres can improve their performance to meet the Government policy of "Leaving no Child Behind". The workshop was attended by IDFL Centre Directors around the country and regions to contribute ideas and strategize how they could improve to meet the growing demand of student dropouts every year. The University of Goroka is the only tertiary institution in the country with eighteen (18) IDFL centres in the country and regions. According to the Vice Chancellor Dr Teng Waninga; the average student who drops out of formal education is 29,000 a year and he edges the workshop attendees to be proactive to accommodate the growing demand in the country. Dr Waninga revealed that the University of Goroka is embarking on course accreditation for other international countries to recognize the courses that the University is offering. The UOG Administration has engaged experts from the United States, New Zealand and Australia to audit the courses offered by the University. Accreditation is a pathway for graduates to go and teach in any of those countries mentioned when graduating from the University of Goroka. The accreditation process will be launched to inform the Nation about the pathway UOG is taking. Dr Waninga said the UOG has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with three Universities in China, Shanghai Normal University, China Open University and Beijing Normal University. "The delegation from Shanghai Normal University will be here soon to help us with our teaching programs and partners in Distance and Flexible Learning". Whilst China Open University will pay the visit to evaluate the IDFL program and connect the centres on their satellite either from Indonesia or Australia to run the IDFL program which will make it convenient and accessible for every student in the country and abroad". The subsequent signing of the Memorandum of Agreement with Beijing Normal University was witnessed by the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Hon James Marape for an exchange cultural program for students. The delegates from Beijing University were in the country early this year to reaffirm the MoA. Consequent to the agreement, Beijing Normal University is sponsoring seven students and staff for the cultural exchange program while Shanghai Normal University is making available two PhD scholarships for UOG staff. Whilst giving the highlights of the pathway the University is undertaking to materialise the National Government Policy on "Leaving No Child Behind"; Dr Waninga encourages everyone to work hard and produce the results intended. "You are not there to enjoy your salary but to produce results and meet the ever-growing demand," if your performance is well below expectations, I will not hesitate to terminate your service as you are a liability to the University" he said. In his emphasis, he also highlights and questions why other IDFL centres didn't conduct the graduation ceremony especially; Port Moresby, Solomon Islands and Mt Hagen centres. He further stated that "the enrollment for students attending IDFL Centres must exceed the students attending the main campus and that must be the motivation to go out to fish for dropouts on the streets and bring them into our study centre and give them a second chance to complement Government policy". The Institute of Distance and Flexible Learning provide a platform for dropouts in the country and the three-day workshop has ended with a high note. The End...

*Display of Arrogance and Stupidity by Allan Bird is heartening..* By embarrassed citizen Hon. Allan Bird, before bringing the biscuit, tin fish, noodles packet, and rice plastic to Parliament, 1) did you know that all the plastic used to make rice, noddles, and biscuits imported from overseas? 2) Did you know that tin cans were brought in from overseas? 3) did you know that wheat to make noodles and flour brought in from places Iike Ukraine that process 40% of global wheat now affected by war. 4) Did you know that rice is grown other places like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, etc and brought into PNG for processing and sales? 5) Did you know that starch, oil, and other food substance including fuel to process those food items imported from overseas? And so 6) when you said, you wanted to skul colleague MPs, did you ever learn about what they called "imported inflation". If you don't know, let me remind you, when global fuel price increases or when war in Ukraine cut down 40% wheat supply meaning supply shortfall by 40% triggering price. 7) In addition, as PM asked you, I hope you had your dinner with rice and tin fish and rice and breakfast with the biscuit? 8) Finally, I appeal to all citizens of PNG to monitor if Allan Bird will ever dine and wine in hotels including his own Village Inn, Wewak or not? By now he should eat and drink like what he preached in Parliament. Thank you.

Suggesting the Return of Peter O'Neill as Prime Minister in Papua New Guinea Observation: In the ongoing discussion about the Vote of No Confidence in Papua New Guinea's Parliament on May 8, 2024, we want to express our support for the former Prime Minister, the Honourable Peter O'Neill, to reclaim the position of Prime Minister. We believe that O'Neill's experience and familiarity with the country's economic challenges make him the ideal candidate to address the current economic disarray and issues faced by the citizens. His strategic political acumen and ability to implement effective policies could help rectify the country's economic woes efficiently. We are concerned that if a new politician were to assume the role of Prime Minister, they may introduce unfamiliar policies and strategies that could prolong the economic challenges faced by Papua New Guinea. By reinstating Peter O'Neill as Prime Minister, we can leverage his knowledge of the country's problems and his capability to devise effective solutions. This would enable a swift and targeted approach to addressing the economic issues and setting the country on a path towards stability and growth. Only wise leaders will choose PO to be the Prime Minister at such a crucial time like this. He has the answer to fix the mess in this country. Just our personal opinion!

Media Statement by Honorable Luther Akisa Wenge, MP, Governor for Morobe Port Moresby, May 26, 2024 Morobe Governor Honorable Luther Akisawa Wenge has come out strongly in support of the move by Finschaffen MP, Honorable Rainbo Paita last night. Mr. Wenge said the move demonstrates how young parliamentarians, including Honorable Paita felt about how the country is being led and managed. He said, "this is an ideal opportunity for Morobe to stand up and take the leadership baton, for far too long, we have been supporting and installing the leadership of this country since Somare became the first prime minister in 1975. "More recently, it was Morobe that res urrected Pangu Pati and made James Marape the prime minister after he left the PNC and joined Pangu. Again, Morobe stood aside and gave Marape the leadership baton, trusting him to lead this country towards growth and prosperity. However, in the last five years, Marape has shown that he is not the fit and proper person to lead Papua New Guinea. Under his leadership, the country has seen a huge increase in foreign debt, inflation, fuel crisis, power blackouts, increase youth unemployment, depleted foreign exchange, zero foreign investments, and a pandemic law and order situation. The public trust of the government and public institutions has declined, and the continuous political interference of our public institutions has weakened our democracy. It is time. Our young leaders step out and challenge the current political status quo, there is no harm in allowing young leaders to take lead. Our history can repeat itself, Paias Wingti showed PNG that it can be done, by successfully moving a vote of no confidence against late Grand Chief, Sir. Michael Thomas Somare in 1985 with the support of other young members of parliament at that time. As a senior politician, statesman and leader, 1 strongly feel it is time to test our young leaders, who have the energy and drive to take us out from our current economic situation and forward, before of our 50th anniversary next year. We need to restore the confidence of our people, to give them hope and meaning especially to our young population who seek opportunities which we have not created for them. Today, I stand as the leader of Morobe and demand change in the leadership of this country, because I am concerned as these young leaders and parliamentarians for Papua New Guinea. Ends.

MOVIE REVIEW Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes *** 1/2 stars Directed by Wes Ball Screenplay by Josh Friedman based on characters created by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and the novel Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle Starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, Sara Wiseman, Lydia Peckham, Travis Jeffery & William H. Macy The apes are back for a fourth installment of the new Planet of the Apes franchise which began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. That film capitalized on the mo-cap talents of The Lord of the Rings and King Kong genius Andy Serkis as Caesar, the first intelligent ape to emerge from James Franco’s lab experiments. This sequel, the first since 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, leaps generations ahead past the death of Caesar to a world where the surviving humans are mostly reduced to savages and the apes war with each other over territory. It’s a risky play for the series as the conflict between ape and man is largely absent now, and all but one of the lead characters is a motion-captured CGI creation. But deft writing, a kick-ass twist in the final moments, and the best visual effects you will likely see this year elevates this sequel to a must-see summer entertainment. Owen Teague - a rising star in independent films like To Leslie and first noticed in Stephen King projects like It and the new The Stand miniseries - is Noa, a member of a clan of apes who practice falconry. He and his parents and comrades live peaceful until they are attacked by another clan who serve a self-proclaimed king named Proximus Caesar. This baddie has perverted the teachings of the original Caesar, enslaves other apes, and is trying to breach an old military outpost in the ruins of San Francisco. Soon, Noa’s clan is captured or destroyed by Proximus’ army and his family taken hostage. Alone, he finds two allies: a wise orangutan (is there another kind?) named Raka and a human girl they dub Nova (a nod to the Charlton Heston original). Nova, who soon revels her name is Mae, is unlike must humans as she is smart and has not become feral, a fate that befell most of the surviving humans as the pandemic that killed off 99% of the population also left the survivors with diminished intelligence. The three allies make their way to Proximus Caesar’s kingdom to confront the despot and free Noa’s people. Where the plot goes from there I won’t say but it leads up to a brilliant finale full of possibilities for future films which are rumored to be many. In between, viewers will marvel at the magnitude of the visual effects achieved here. The motion-capture technology has reached new levels perhaps surpassing even the superb nuanced look to Josh Brolin’s Thanos. Each ape’s face is filled with emotional expressiveness and is remarkably convincing. In addition, there are several water effects sequences that were stunning as the apes do battle on a beachfront fortress. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is satisfying summer escapism and continues the tradition of being one of the best franchises for special effects wonks looking for the latest technological advances in the art of CGI.
