The Materal Uncle: 3 of 4
In Germania ch. 20, Tacitus mentions the bond between a man and his maternal uncle as a sacred kinship among our folk. If Mímir is Urðr’s brother, he is also Wōden’s maternal uncle. This would explain Wōden as an apprentice under Mímir and why he repeatedly seeks Mímir’s counsel at the well. The entire power structure of the Ēse is built upon the Germanic understanding of kinship. The gods did not just wander into power; they were trained, guided, and legitimized.

The Identity of Bǫlþorn: 2 of 4
Names in our lore are never arbitrary, but they hold keys to uncovering truths. We know that the primordial Eoten Ymir was known by many by-names. Vafþrúðnismál 32-33 recounts that when Ymir slept, a boy and girl were born from beneath his arms; these are Mímir and Urðr, the oldest beings in the cosmos. When we map these genealogies together, a pattern emerges that indicates that Bǫlþorn is simply another name for Ymir.
If Mímir and Urðr are the children of Ymir (Bǫlþorn), and we know from Hávamál 140 that Bestla is Mímir’s sister, then Bestla must be Urðr. She is not some obscure, nameless Eoteness, but the premier Norn of the fate over the great Eirmengrund Well, Urðarbrunnr. The primordial matriarch from whom the entire divine line descends.

The Mystery of Bestla: 1 of 4
In the study of our lore, we often hit a wall: who was Bestla, the mother of Wōden? Most scholars dismiss her as a minor giantess, relegating her to a footnote in the story of the Ēse, but this dismissal ignores the depth of the Eddas, our primary sources. If we apply the Theory of Convergence, the principle that our lore is a grand, cohesive epic, we find that there’s more to Bestla than meets the eye. In Hávamál 140, Wōden wins the runes from Mímir, who is explicitly called the son of Bǫlþorn. If Bestla is Mímir’s sister, then we can connect her as a child of Bǫlþorn as well, but who is Bǫlþorn?
The answer lies in identifying an ancient and powerful figure in our cosmology.

Where do we find Galdor in our ancestral records?
In Ynglingasaga, Óðinn and his temple priests were called Ljóðasmiðir (Sacred-Song Smiths), and the Æsir were known as Galdrasmiðir (Galdr-Smiths).
In the Hávamál, Óðinn sings his sacred songs (ljóðar) and recounts how he obtained nine Fimbulljóðar (Mighty-Songs) a from a famed son of Bǫlþorn, father of Bestla.
In Grettis Saga, we see a description of a woman who carves runes into a tree root, reddens them with her blood, and sings galdr over them (kvað yfir galdra) to cast a powerful spell.
Sigrdrifumál mentions "good galdr” and Svipdagsmál: Grógaldr is filled with mentionings.
When we trace the holy art of galdor across the entire Germanic world, we find that the lore extends beyond Scandinavia, into the West Germanic and Anglo-Saxon traditions.
The Old High German Merseburg Charm mirrors the structural intent of Hávamál 149, which details chanting to escape from bonds and fetters. The charm uses the word biguoul, to enchant, which is linguistically and spiritually related to Galdr.
In the Old English corpus, many surviving galdor were Christianized by medieval scribes; however, we can establish heathen origins. One example is through the Nine Herbs Galdor. Often translated as Charm, the text actually says Galdor, as well as directly describing how Wōden took nine glory twigs (wuldor tanas) and slew an adder, causing it to fly apart into nine pieces.

Repost from Black Hills Heathenry

The story of Beowulf begins.
We are excited to introduce the first three pieces in a new six-part art series by Runar Hall, inspired by the heroic imagery and artistic traditions of the early Germanic world.
The series opens with:
• Grendel’s attack on Heorot
• Beowulf’s arrival in Denmark
• The battle between Beowulf and Grendel
Each piece captures a different moment from the legendary epic through detailed knotwork, mythic imagery, and a style inspired by the art of the old world.

What is Galdor?
In traditional Heathenry, Galdor is built around an ancient principle of chanting to bring about a desired result, i.e. sending intention to manifest a physical result. It is important to know that Galdor is different from ġebed or biðja (prayer). While praying directly asks the Gods for a specific outcome, Galdor acts as an indirect calling out to the very idea of what you wish to accomplish.
There’s a common misconception today that Galdor means chanting the runes, but this idea isn’t in the sources. While Galdor was sometimes sang over runes, it’s not a runic chant. To be a curate, Galdor is a form of sacred singing that utilizes specific poetic meters, such as Galdralag, which is itself, a form of Ljóðahattr.
Ultimately, Galdor is a divine gift that allows us to connect our ǫnd (breath and spirit) to the essence of the Gods, but we must be clear, Galdor is not Seiðr, which by is harmful black arts.
