There is no declaration of Īmān except that it must be tested and verified. The effects of sins One of the punishments of sins is that they remove blessings and prosperity, and permit vengeance and punishments. So, prosperity does not disappear from the slave except due to sin. Likewise, punishment is not justified against him except due to sin. Equally, Alī bn. Abī Tālib, may Allāh be pleased with him, said "A trial does not descend except due to sin, and it is not removed except with Tawbah." And He the Exalted says: وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَن كَثِيرٍ ﴿٣٠﴾ “And whatever strikes you of disaster, it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much. {30}” - Sūrah ash-Shūrā [42] And He the Exalted also said: ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللّهَ لَمْ يَكُ مُغَيِّرًا نِّعْمَةً أَنْعَمَهَا عَلَى قَوْمٍ حَتَّى يُغَيِّرُواْ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ وَأَنَّ اللّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿٥٣﴾ “That is because Allāh would not change a favour which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing. {53}” - Sūrah al-Anfāl [8] So, Allāh the Exalted informs that He doesn’t change His Favours that He bestows on anyone until he himself changes that which is within himself. Thus he changes obedience to Allāh to His disobedience, gratitude towards Him to ingratitude to Him, and the means to His Pleasure to the means of His Wrath. So, if he changes (i.e. that within himself) it (i.e. prosperity) is changed (to adversity), a corresponding recompense. However, if he changes disobedience to obedience, Allāh will change punishment to wellbeing, and humiliation to honour. He the Exalted says: اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتّٰى يُغَيِّرُوْا مَا بِاَنْفُسِهِمْۙ ... ﴿١١﴾ “Indeed, Allāh will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allāh intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it.
