Photos by | A human bone carving was discovered in the tomb of a Maya ruler at the Chochkitam site in Guatemala, thanks in part to lidar. The intricate carvings, likely made with volcanic glass, depict the owner, Itzam Kokaj Bahlam, wearing a headdress with hieroglyphs and holding a mask of a storm god found in his burial. Radiocarbon dating suggests he ruled around A.D. 350. This is from my work on lidar in archaeology. It uses aerial light pulses to generate precise 3D data compared to the lengthy process of traditional mapping and excavation. It enabled the discovery of new structures near Chochkitam in a short time. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 🎥 National Geographic by ASM Channels

From the moment it takes its first uncertain steps, this young elephant calf in the Masai Mara of Kenya has been enveloped in a wealth of maternal nurturing and direction. The strength and endurance of female connections form the foundation of elephant society, with matriarchal mothers, sisters, aunts, and daughters all playing vital roles. Through collective mothering, the calves are shielded from dangers, offered support and nourishment, and inherit the essential wisdom needed for survival. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 🎥 National Geographic by ASM Channels

Photo by Anastasia Taylor-Lind | This is my friend Daniel Naprous, reclining with his Friesian stallion Prince at their Buckinghamshire farm in England. Witnessing the tender interactions between Daniel and his horses is truly magical. As a photographer, I often find myself deep in thought and working under pressure. Horses have always held a special place in my heart, as I grew up surrounded by them. Being around horses brings me a sense of tranquility and presence that I struggle to find elsewhere. Communicating intuitively with a horse brings me a unique sense of peace. Share your perception of health with us by using #BupaPictureOfHealthChallenge. Photos by Matthieu Paley | In photography, losing oneself is often the goal. Enjoy these images from an afternoon exploring one of South Asia's largest fishing harbors in Karachi, Pakistan. I was struck by the unity of the men and their traditionally crafted, intricately designed boats. Many crews from Korangi harbor set off into the Arabian Sea for 40-day trips. I aspire to accompany one of these crews on their journey someday. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 🎥 National Geographic by ASM Channels

Watch video by Macstonephoto | High tide slowly enters the Florida Bay mangrove flats, bringing along numerous young lemon sharks searching for their next meal. This hidden side of the Everglades serves as crucial nurseries for various marine creatures, including small fish, crustaceans, and sharks seeking shelter and a safe environment to mature before venturing into the deeper waters. Although wishing for a relaxing pedicure, it seems sharks are not interested in such pampering. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 🎥 National Geographic by ASM Channels
