Chloe laid off from Discord
mainrole @ New
This is about that colors creator. Her videos portray working in tech as an amazing life, how Discord is the best environment she's worked in, and how she's making a huge impact.
She recently launched server shop, which seems to be a pretty big deal. She vlogs about organizing this big launch party for it. Honestly, she seemed like a hard worker.
...But then gets laid off shortly after.
Nothing against creators, love watching them. Just confused why she would get laid off as part of the 17% after releasing a huge project bringing in immediate revenue.
Why would a company do this to a key employee? What happened? Anyone have inside information? These layoffs aren't making sense.

EQ matters much more in this industry than IQ
PpPK01 @ Google
Title. I’ve worked at several traditionally “high iq” places like Jane Street, Citadel, and Google as a QR/SWE. By far the really charismatic technically useless bottom feeders almost always outperformed high IQ geniuses even though they had no tangible output. I literally knew a QR at Citadel who couldn’t write a line of code (not hyperbole). He was the most charismatic and social human I’ve ever met.
I’ve pretty much stopped believing any company is a “meritocracy” even the ones who pride themselves as such. There is no meritocracy, life’s unfair, so get charismatic, or gtfo.

My cholesterol levels after diet and exercise
RolandDrum @ Yahoo Inc
10 months ago, my doctor wants me to start medication to control my cholesterol. I told him to give me some time to see if I can lower it with diet and exercise. I changed diet to fish, veggies and some chicken. Oatmeal for breakfast and coffee. Exercise daily 30 min uphill on the treadmill. I will try to increase it to 40 mins. My LDLs are still elevated, any tips?

Very weird situation
gtuycs @ Adobe
Manager is documenting everything and asking me status every day. Now my stock vests in April and review cycle is Feb . I have a hefty amount of rsus but it feels like he wants me to fire before that. This is my first year and just before my first year vesting he is trying to pip me. One year vesting schedule sucks.

50k to 3m in 5 years - My personal investment strategy
ypPE03 @ Riot Games
Through trial and error I’ve come up with a personal investment strategy that’s generated from around 100% to 200% returns per year (averaged). I’ve gone from 50k to 3m in about 5 years, which includes going through two bear markets (during which I saw temporary 80%+ losses).
The strategy is very simple. Consider only 5-10 of the top performing companies, each with a long history of great returns and a sustainable competitive advantage. I chose Microsoft, apple, Amazon, Facebook/Meta, Nvidia, and Google. Buy LEAPs of each company and hold them for a long time. You can instead choose SPY if you want less risk at the cost of less returns. I chose 2 years to expiry and roll them at around 1 year to expiry. This gives you a lot of leverage, avoids the final year of theta decay, and avoids the potential of any option expiring worthless.
I would use my monthly savings (around 2-5k monthly), and stockpile cash in my brokerage account. Once the securities dipped significantly due to natural market fluctuations, such as a bear market or temporary pullback, this cash was used to buy more LEAPs. Some of this cash was also used to roll the LEAPs forward. Over time more of this cash was used to roll the LEAPs and less was used to buy more LEAPs. The company to add more LEAPs was always chosen as the one who was currently the most undervalued, or incurred the heaviest temporary dip. Or, if you’re doing SPY, simply buy more SPY LEAPs.
For strike prices I would simply buy slightly OTM LEAPs every single time.
After achieving a large enough portfolio your income will not be enough to add new LEAPs and instead go entirely into rolling forward. At this time you should be a multimillionaire and should swap to another strategy. Personally I have switched to holding stocks.
That’s it.
This strategy is for those who have high risk tolerance and a high income. You will watch the value of your portfolio tank 80%+ straight through a bear market like COVID crash. If you don’t have the guts to just simply buy more LEAPs and roll old ones forward, then this isn’t for you.
The strategy is entirely agnostic to market conditions and operates on the thesis that the market will always go up in the long run, and assumes you have a stable income. You must only invest money you won’t need, as no selling is allowed. Only top companies are chosen — if you don’t know how to do this then simply use SPY as an alternative. This strategy utilizes your initial high income to portfolio size ratio to achieve high leverage. All risk is mitigated with patience. After a certain point your income to portfolio size ratio will become small enough to warrant a different strategy.
My TC during these 5 or so years was 200k to 400k, fluctuating. 10 yoe.

I love Brittany from cloudflare
189gal @ Stripe
This was the most coherent way to pushback on HR and corporate drones. Amazing job backing them up against the wall and publicly sharing it.
She is obviously extremely talented. Imagine trying to get out of a sales call with her.
Wish her all the best with a lawsuit and a big settlement.
Context : watch this 10min long video where she is supposedly fired for performance.

Ultimate lame move… no one cares where you used to work. If they do they would click on your profile. People who do this are basically the thots of LinkedIn. Might as well be posting bikini pics. Simps…

Strategies to Hedge Against Layoffs?

Tim Cook— what a legend.
lkbvnt @ Google
Other companies scramble to layoff employees, despite record profits (aka Google)
Apple is the one company that has carried its employees through these tough times. And they’ve also carried the market/investors— stock is doing great.
I’ve been critical about Apple in the good times (no free food wtf). But now I see the quality and caliber of leadership they have.
Yes, I’ll complain that the iPhone launches are incremental. But massive respect for Tim Cook 🫡

I will say it again: tech needs unions
Uctp54 @ The Wall Street Journal
Unions are not just about pay. It's about job security, work life balance, and not being treated like expendable code monkeys.
The book, The Good Enough Job, has a great chapter on the first tech company union at Kickstarter for those curious on how to form a union.
And if you're curious about the pros of a union - this is what union members at my company get (the contract is publically available btw):
1. Advance notice for layoffs: Dow Jones has to give you a 30 day notice before laying you off. If it is due to outsourcing, you get 45 days notice.
2. Severance packages: depends on tenure. Less than 9 months is 3 weeks. 20+ years is 52 weeks of severance. If layoffs are due to outsourcing, you get 4 additional severance weeks.
3. Reassignment options before resorting to layoffs. Relocation package may be offered
4. Training and upskilling opportunities: dow Jones has to teach you how to use new technology in a reasonable timeframe. And if your job is replaced due to automation, you get a training allowance ($3K - $12K depending on tenure) for education and placement assistance
It is just basic worker rights. Btw i am not in the union - tech leads and management is excluded - but i support the fight

Discord is laying off 17 percent of employees

In other word when CEO/upper management over hires it’s the employees fault . Anyway more layoffs this week.

Wtf is wrong with the medical system in USA
aInR30 @ Amazon
I was recently diagnosed with a condition that requires urgent surgery. However, I’ve been reaching out to multiple hospitals in the Seattle area, and the earliest appointment I can get with a doctor is in March. This situation is incredibly frustrating. Is this a widespread issue across the U.S., or do less populated states have shorter wait times for such medical procedures?

I'm convinced to never work for Big Tech ever again
pipjasy @ ex-Amazon
Looking at the fact that companies like Amazon, Google are laying off people two years in a row - says a lot about how miserably these companies have failed at leading in the last year.
Amazon has been silently laying off people, and very few actually made news: Nov 2022, Jan 2023, Apr 2023, Nov 2023 (Alexa, Silent), Jan 2024. Between Apr-Nov 2023 there were a lot of silent layoffs and forced PIPs.
Google - Jan 2023, 2024. Not sure if they had any silent layoffs.
Meta - These retards rehired people they laid off lol.
The joke is on them as all of these companies have also been hiring and interviewing folks, giving out offers lol.
The "leaders" of these companies have failed big time. If you needed to layoff again this year, sounds like you repeated your hiring mistakes?
I'm convinced to never ever work for Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta again.

A message to anyone laid off from the big techs
CEO_god @ ex-Google
I've been in that place a year ago. It is scary, the future is unknown and you're not in an optimal negotiation position. However, in a year from now you will be greatful to have been pushed out -- these corps are past their glory days, most people stay there because the handcuffs are real (both TC wise and technology wise) and it is scary to go out and compete in the open market. Staying there for another year might have been comfy in the immediate term but it's like keeping your heads in the sand, making the handcuffs problem even bigger for future you. The sooner you leave, the better are your chances to find a good new path for your career. You have a significant advantage compared to folks that will be laid off in Jan 25, or even worse, the ones that will stay to rot withing the dying kingdoms and will pop out their heads in 5 years. The sooner you get out is better for your career, and if you can get that sweet 6 months package while doing so then all the better.
Stay strong, work hard to build your next opportunity and feel free to DM.
