🔶️Blind Drilling In Oil & Gas Wells
Blind drilling is a technique used in oil and gas wells to conserve drilling fluid stocks while ensuring the annulus is filled with water. This method involves drilling at the minimum pump rate and topping up the annulus with water. If returns start to occur during drilling, it could indicate that the circulation loss zone has been plugged with drilled cuttings or the onset of a kick. Blind drilling with water, occasionally using viscous pills to aid hole cleaning, is a common practice in some areas. This technique can even be employed when drilling fractured carbonate gas reservoirs by continuously pumping water down the annulus to prevent gas kick percolation.
The need for blind drilling arises when there is a loss zone in the lower part of the hole section. In such cases, it is often wiser to blind drill this section, attempt to regain circulation, and then proceed with casing running
