St Pio of Pietrelcina, fondly known as Padre Pio, evangelized to countless souls, through his piety, and his celebration of the Sacraments with great reverence. Many spiritual blessings and graces were bestowed on him, among which was the stigmata, which he bore for 50 years of his life.

With Jesus' call to follow Him, Matthew a tax-collector, heeded the call and followed Jesus, becoming one of the four evangelists. The symbol of Matthew is the Divine Man, symbolising Jesus' humanity, as his Gospel begins with the genealogy, incarnation, and birth.

On the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, the Catholic Church in India celebrates Day of the Girl Child, to highlight how precious and important she is to the world. We pray that the systemic evils against girls that have long prevailed in our country may be gradually eradicated.

Today we celebrate the birthday of God's most perfect disciple, who honoured Him with her "Yes" and brought into the world His Son. May we always cling onto our Heavenly Mother knowing that she leads us to Jesus, her Son.

The Corporal Works of Mercy give us guidelines on the acts of charity that we must try to carry out as Christians. Our faith is not lived by the mere profession of words, but in deed. The Archdiocese of Bombay Calendar for September reminds us of Christ's words "As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me."

The Archdiocese of Bombay celebrates 140 years since it was raised to a Metropolitan See. We continue to pray that we may continue to spread the love of Christ through the Word, our sincere worship, and by living as faithful witnesses of the Gospel.

St Pope Paul VI landed at the airport in Bombay on December 2, 1964, for the 38th International Eucharistic Congress which was held from November 28-December 6. St Pope John Paul II made his Apostolic Journey to India from February 1-10, 1986. He spent time in Bombay on the last three days of his journey, visiting the Cathedral, the Basilica, as well as celebrating Mass at Shivaji Park in Dadar.

August 31 Monday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time Smart leaders prepare a new manifesto, make passionate speeches and do anything to win the acclaim of people. Jesus did the opposite. He quoted an old Isaiah manifesto, made a simple speech and never watered down anything to fit the mould of people. Clearly, Jesus’ focus was on being a good leader never an ambitious one. Yet, His goodness was often sidelined, especially by His own people. In the Gospel of today, we see the fickleness of the human heart. As long as the Nazarenes heard a message and saw signs that enamoured them, they were ‘astonished by Jesus’ graciousness’. But the moment Jesus refused to give in to their demand for more flamboyance — in an attempt to further their quest for God — their astonishment turned into rage, almost instantly. Jesus came, as St. Paul says, to preach of the power of the Cross. Miracles are merely a gateway to the power of God — a power that moves away from wonder-working to the wonder of redemption? Where do we push our journey with Jesus towards — the cliff or the Cross? Do we go with Jesus to the Cross, or with those who would rid themselves of Him at the edge of a cliff?

As Metropolitan, Abp. John Rodrigues holds the responsibility of guiding and supporting the bishops of the suffragan dioceses. These dioceses with the Archdiocese of Bombay itself form the ecclesiastical province of Bombay. The metropolitan’s special role is symbolised by the pallium, a woollen band received from the Pope, which serves as the official insignia of a Metropolitan Archbishop.
