| 10 | Story idea. The destination is reversed. Sora lands on Hollow Bastion, Riku at Traverse Town. Riku can have the Keyblade, so Donald and Goofy are at his side looking for Kairi and Sora, Sora gets the Soul Eater (this is a hilarious mental image) and Maleficent offers Sora the same deal she offered Riku: help me, and I'll help you find Kairi.
… because I think this becomes an In Spite Of A Nail story situation. Riku probably doesn't care too much about the people on the worlds he visits looking for Kairi and Sora. This is his adventure, and he's the hero chosen by the special keyblade. He's in it for the destination, not the journey. Sora for his naïveté won't hurt someone he doesn't know for no reason, and he's much more uncomfortable with what Maleficent is asking of him, while also questioning why she's so dismissive of her supposed friends as they fall one by one to darkness. Donald rejects Sora from joining the trio on the Gummiship, but Maleficent’s honeyed words slide off of Sora as he watches the other trio. Sora does kidnap Jasmine, but from his perspective it was because the place was coming down and he was trying to keep her safe, and Maleficent hasn't told him everything of her plans yet. The meeting in Monstro goes much different, not with Sora trying to kidnap Pinocchio but befriend the puppet to try and learn what's wrong with Kairi, while Riku is wondering why Sora is even bothering. Sora watches as villains who thought they could control the darkness lose themselves to it. Riku's conversation with Triton about the power of the keyblade feeds into his fantasy of being the chosen hero who can do anything. Donald and Goofy never quite gel with Riku, because he sees them as more bodyguards or sidekicks on HIS journey. Riku calls Sora stupid for not taking any chance or power to save Kairi. When offered the power of darkness by Maleficent, Sora is much more reluctant to tap into it, and it's only to protect Kairi that he flees with her to Hollow Bastion.
And it’s at Hollow Bastion where it ends. Sora rescues an injured Beast from the Heartless rather than let him fall to darkness or be cut down. Riku, Donald, and Goofy fight their way to the vestibule, and that’s where the confrontation happens. Where Riku calls Sora weak for failing to save Kairi and that he was never strong enough to do what was needed to bring the three of them back together, and Sora rejects him, calling him out for his behavior across the worlds, for not being afraid of his growing darkness when he saw what happened to those who weren’t careful, and that Kairi would NEVER want them to sacrifice innocent people to save her, and that there has to be another way. Sora finally finds the strength in his heart to stand his ground and tell his rival that he’s in the wrong. He throws Soul Eater to the ground, explicitly rejecting Maleficent’s power and path, and pleads that he knows his best friend is still in there somewhere and they can save Kairi together…
… and Riku in his anger launches a fireball at the begging Sora to prove he’s not strong enough to save Kairi, only for it to be deflected by Goofy who calls out Riku for attacking his best friend, joined shortly by Donald who rejected Sora joining their journey long ago as he out loud calls out Riku for all the unintentional harm he’s caused. Riku says he doesn’t need to be saved by anyone because he has the keyblade and he’s the hero, even as Sora promises he’ll save Kairi AND Riku, no matter what, because…
“My friends are my power.”
Silence. A burst of light. And in that instant, Riku’s heart is weaker than Sora’s, and the keyblade switches allegiance to the boy who never coveted it and who the story hasn’t been following until THIS instant. Riku grabs the Soul Eater and flees in his panic, Sora, Donald, and Goofy following him, and the story proceeds much as we knew. Because it always had to be Sora. Not because of destiny or fate, but because of his heart. | 119 |
