Perseus saving Andromeda, study of a medieval manuscript painting, gouache on cold pressed watercolour paper
Drawing practice - three figure studies after Salvator Rosa, ink on toned paper
Study of some German armour from the 1500’s.
Graphite, ink and charcoal on toned paper, A4.
Book cover design process.
As you can see, there were many iterations and changes. I tried to exhaust lots of different design possibilities along the way. After working closely with the client and receiving helpful feedback from friends, I believe I managed to push through the chaos and find the proper forms in the end.

Finally got round to finishing this study after Franz von Stuck's 1915 oil painting Hercules and the Hydra.
I painted this with gouache on watercolour paper.
I have done a few gouache paintings now and this is the first time I have felt a modicum of command over the medium, which is encouraging.
I created this piece of artwork as a submission for the King Arthur day stream on art, part 3: The modern and contemporary, and was pleased to see it featured at the end of the video. Great stream, great channel, there is a huge amount on King Arthur there, you may be interested:

Chabal was always this hulking giant of French magnificence
Some physiognomy studies of the French rugby players Alain Esteve, Sebastien Chabal and Gerard Cholley...truly almost lost archaic phenotypes, aggressively protruding into modernity.
I recorded my progress roughly every hour to make this step by step process video of how I designed and illustrated this piece in Photoshop.
"Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England"
My first piece of Arthurian art - a syncretic mix of Celtic design, Medieval manuscripts and modern illustration.
