The Bishoftu International Airport Project, as documented in a recently disclosed Final Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), gives rise to serious, irreversible, and ongoing violations of the collective rights of the Oromo people under international human rights law. By the ESIA’s own admissions, the project: 1. Results in the permanent destruction of Oromo ancestral land, cultural institutions, sacred sites, and ritual landscapes; 2. Fragments indigenous communities, dismantling social cohesion and undermining the Oromo people’s ability to exercise internal self-determination; 3. Falls short of international standards on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), reducing consent to procedural consultation rather than genuine collective decision-making; Disproportionately affects indigenous pastoralist communities, whose livelihoods, identity, and survival are inseparable from land and mobility. Taken together, these impacts directly engage Ethiopia’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the authoritative standards articulated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The BIA Project entails large-scale land acquisition in Oromia, officially displacing approximately 2,488 households in its first phase alone, while the actual number of affected persons is substantially higher when indirect and cumulative impacts are taken into account. According to the ESIA: 1. The affected Oromo communities maintain deep spiritual, cultural, and economic relationships with the land, relationships that cannot be replicated or compensated elsewhere; 2. The project area encompasses sacred sites, cemeteries, religious institutions, and ritual spaces of profound cultural significance; Traditional governance structures, including elements of the Gadaa system, are expected to be disrupted or rendered non-functional; 3. The resulting cultural and social impacts are assessed as being of “Very High Significance” and largely irreversible, even with proposed mitigation measures. -_-_-
