Star Party| Sri Lanka Initiated in the year 2004, Star Party Sri Lanka is recognized as the first and largest interschool observational astronomy & astrophotography competition, and astronomy workshop in South Asia, enticing students of over a 150 schools island wide, which is organized under the momentous collaboration of the Anandian Astronomical Association and the Astronomical Society of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy. Excellence in the past 16 years Was discerned as the major astronomical event organized in Sri Lanka for the year 2009, the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). Has been endorsed by United Nations’ Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) since 2012 Was endorsed as a Global Astronomy Month event by Astronomers Without Borders in 2019. Was endorsed by The International Astronomical Search Collaboration in 2020 Star Party’21| Cyberspace For the 17th consecutive year, coming to you in a fresh digital perspective due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Star Party’21 will be the first and largest virtual international interschool observational astronomy & astrophotography competition and astronomy workshop in South Asia that targets a worldwide participation of more than 1500 astrophiles. Our objectives Evaluating and appreciating the astronomical knowledge and skills of students within the boundaries of a virtual competitive environment Creating an influencing passion in astronomy among school students Building mutual connections between astronomical communities worldwide Personality development of young astrophiles by promoting essential qualities such as social and communication skills, leadership and teamwork What we have lined up for you this year… The Competition The Star Party’21 competition will take place under two consecutive rounds; 1) Qualifying Round All teams that register for Star Party’21| Cyberspace will face a theory paper under the following subjects; Observational astronomy, Cosmology, Rocketry & Astrophysics. 2) Final Round Teams with the highest marks will qualify for the Star Party’21 final round which will be held under 3 sections, namely; the Observation round, the Spot Test and the Viva round. The most imperative aspect of the Star Party is the Observation round. This round is specialized as a multimedia round and it includes quizzes on Data Analysis, Tour to the Universe, Telescopes and Moon & Constellation Mapping. Spot Test is conducted among the participating school teams where one member of each team has to answer random astronomy related questions within a specific time duration. In the Viva quiz round, Questions from different categories of astronomy along with multimedia (video clips, images) are asked from the competitors within a specific time period. Astrophotography competition In addition to the main competition, an astrophotography competition will take place where competitors can photograph and submit images of celestial objects in the night sky with the help of specialized cameras. This competition will take place a week before the commencement of Star Party’21. The winning astrophotograph will be announced and rewarded on the day of the Star Party’21. Workshop Academic lectures including fun-filled activities will be conducted by the Old Anandians’ Astronomical Association and the Old Girls of the Astronomical Society of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, demonstrating the fundamentals of astronomy to the enthusiastic newcomers to the field. Finally, a theory paper along with a crossword puzzle will be provided to test students’ knowledge. The workshop will be conducted in two categories as local and international where the local workshop will be conducted in Sinhala language and the international workshop will be conducted in the English language.
