🔧 PCB routing in Python Preferring to spend hours typing code instead of graphically pushing traces around in a PCB layout tool, [James Bowman] over at ExCamera Labs has developed CuFlow, a method for routing PCBs in Python. Whether or not you’re on-board with the concept, you have to admit the results look pretty good. More information: Project's review Github page #electronics #articles #experiments #python

📲 Over-the-Air Updates with AWS and FreeRTOS What you should know about over-the-air communications using AWS and FreeRTOS Updating firmware in the field has always been a critical component of even the earliest of embedded systems. Access to hardware interfacing tools like a JTAG or SWD programmer provides physical access to embedded system programming ports. Other access methods for firmware updates include interfaces such as USB, automotive CAN, a serial port, and so on. Wireless port connectivity has gained prominence as more embedded devices become part of the IoT. In today’s post, we will explore such wireless, over-the-air (OTA) communications using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and FreeRTOS. More information... #articles #IoT

📷 Discord Security Camera With an ESP32 Use an ESP32 Cam and a passive infrared (PIR) sensor to create a motion-activated security camera that will post a photo to a Discord channel, where you have access to create a webhook. We'll build out the test circuit, using a breadboard and jump wire. We'll then build a wiring harness using Dupont connectors to allow for easy connections to the development board and PIR sensor. We'll then use our choice of a wall or ceiling-mounted 3D printed case to contain our parts and our camera. The ceiling-mounted camera makes use of an inexpensive decoy camera that can be purchased online. More information... #projects #camera #esp32 #camera #IoT

📰 How NASA's Oxygen-Making Machine Could Change Mars Forever Whether for breathing or sending rockets back home, we'll need to make oxygen on Mars. Soon, we'll know if it's possible. According to NASA’s estimates, a four-person crew will need a lot of propellant—approximately 15,000 pounds of fuel and roughly 55,000 pounds of oxygen—to generate the thrust needed to leave the Martian surface and return home. Lugging all of that oxygen from Earth is a hassle. That’s where the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, or MOXIE, comes in. Roughly the size of a car battery, MOXIE is one of NASA's many in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) experiments and the first to travel to space. In essence, ISRU is the agency’s version of homesteading, and the experiments explore ways for future spacefarers to produce things from resources available on other worlds. 🤖 3D Printed Robot Arm This robot arm is made almost entirely of 3D printed parts that snap together. It has three servo-controlled joints, plus a rotating base and gripper. The arm is controlled by a series of buttons that connect to an Arduino Uno hidden in the base. A simple circuit makes connecting the servos and buttons to the Arduino easy and makes set-up and assembly very quick. More information... #projects #robots #arduino #3d_modeling

🎬 Introducing Stretch Meet Stretch, a prototype of our new robot designed to automate box moving tasks in warehouses and distribution centers. Stretch’s mobile base allows it to go to where repetitive box lifting is required - unloading trucks, building pallets of boxes and order building. 🤖 Robot axes, drive safety, and power architectures Depending on the intended tasks, robots can have varying axes and various axis configurations - robot kinesiology A robot axis of motion is often called a degree of freedom (DoF). Robots with higher DoFs have access to a greater amount of space and can perform more complex tasks. 1-axis robot is capable of linear motion in a single dimension. 2-axis: is usually composed of two linear guides that enable two-dimensional motion, such as an x, y, or y, z configuration. 3-axis: is a basic 2-axis design with an additional linear axis guide, or a cylindrical guide, that enables x, y, z motion. 4-axis: adds the ability to rotate the object that it is holding. 5-axis: adds the ability for two-dimensional rotation of the object it is holding. 6-axis: can mimic the motions of a human arm with three linear DoF and three rotational DoF. 7-axis: design placed on a rail or stage that enables it it to move from point A to B. 🔋 Big breakthrough for 'massless' energy storage In groundbreaking new research, scientists have made a structural battery 10 times better than in any previous experiment In the new paper, researchers from Chalmers University of Technology and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden reveal how their “massless” structural battery works. To make the new structural battery, the scientists layered a buffer glass “fabric” between a positive and negative electrode, then packed it with a space-age polymer electrolyte and cured it in the oven. What results is a tough, flat battery cell that conducts well and holds up to tensile tests in all directions. The battery’s combined qualities (or “multifunctionality”) make it 10 times better than any previous massless battery — a project scientists have worked on since 2007. 🚰 Arduino controlled smart irrigation system There are plenty of projects out there that automate irrigation. Many focus on the problem of automatically reacting to dry soil by opening a single valve, but a fully automated system with one valve is not what I want for my lawn. I do not want the sprinklers to turn on unexpectedly and I had to solve a different type of problem: Managing a specific irrigation program with individual control over each sprinkler. The brains in this case is an Arduino Nano 33 IoT, which is the first time I used one of these. In principle, you should be able to use pretty much any microcontroller, but if you want to control it via Wi-Fi, you quite obviously need one with Wi-Fi capabilities. If you want to run my code with only minor modifications, you probably also want to go for the Arduino, but if you do not mind some adaptation, an ESP32 would probably be the cheaper and much more common choice. 📟 PID Desktop Marble Balancer (Glo Rev 2) The PID controller is one of the first things taught to engineering students and designers. Its simplicity and versatility make it easy to understand and implement. This ball balancer uses the PID feedback loop to balance a marble perfectly on the center of a beam. Additionally, it contains interactive LEDs which gauge the relative position of the marble. It also utilizes one of the most well-known simple machines: the lever. The device is driven by a prototype of Glo Rev 2, a new RGB LED strip controller. The new chip is Wi-Fi compatible, works with Amazon Echo/Google Home, and has plenty of I/O to add modifications.
