Like why doesn’t it destroy good bacteria in gut for example?" A: Chlorine dioxide is a size selective oxidizer. This means that it oxidizes the smallest particles present and works its way up. As compared with viruses, bacteria, and fungus we have a sophisticated redox system that produces antioxidants to neutralize many oxidizers in our body which include oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, and more. These oxidizers have many purposes in our body and they are both a benefit and can be harmful. This is the whole reason why the antioxidant theory of aging was developed. Oxidizers can be beneficial when they are in their right proportions and they are beneficial to us because we can neutralize them before they caused harm. There are limitations to that and they can be harmful when the doses are extremely high and the oxidizers cannot be neutralized quick enough. The most part viruses, bacteria, and fungus however do not have any type of redox system and they are much more vulnerable to the negative affects of these chemicals. First, much of the gut microbiome itself secrets small quantities of reactive oxygen species (also called ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide and superoxide. For this reason, gut bacteria can resist other reactive oxygen species in small quantities. Lactobacilli for example produce ROS, and this gives them an advantage over pathogens because they can withstand higher exposures to ROS like hydrogen peroxide and superoxide that are produced by the body as part of the immune system to destroy pathogens. Let me use a simple illustration. Think of ROS secreting bacteria like electric eels. The electricity from one electric eel does not disturb another. So it is with gut bacteria and reactive oxygen species. Gut bacteria that secrete ROS are not affected by ROS from other sources. That includes chlorine dioxide unless delivered at overwhelming industrial strength. In the same way, an electric eel could not withstand a lightning strike.
