25 An increasing number of developing countries are expanding their tourist industry.
Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
An ever-growing number of second and third-world states are now trying to foster their tourist trade. In my opinion, such a change is likely to prove highly disadvantageous rather than advantageous.
Admittedly, developing tourism can do a lot to benefit an emerging economy striving to create new sources of revenue. First, with the influx of tourists, the local economy can enjoy a boost in the inflow of foreign currency tourists bring, which can create more demand for the local currency, thereby slowing down inflation. Additionally, tourists, who mostly visit from industrialized nations, have far more purchasing power than the local population, and therefore spend more. This, in turn, improves the sales of local businesses, which then can expand to create more employment opportunities for jobless people from that area. Thus, tourism can have some economic merits.
However, these monetary and economic benefits seem insignificant when compared with the unprecedented tall the rise of tourism can take both on the nature and the culture of the host country. Tourism, if goes unmanaged, has the power to turn pristine and unspoiled areas such as beaches with white sand and shores with turquoise waters into landfills. Many tourists are extremely heedless of the way they dispose of their litter, and any tourist attraction can therefore get filled with plastic and food waste. Such a pollution is only a half of the environmental degradation tourism can bring about. Another half is cause by the pressure on the local infrastructure. To meet the increased energy needs resulting from a growing number of consumers, new energy power plants are constructed leading to a larger amounts of exhaust fumes emitted to the atmosphere.
Another imminent threat is to the local culture and the traditional way of life in the local country. Many visitors, being far away from their families and societies, normally engage in one long party, disturbing the peace and tranquility of the area. Such people can sometimes abuse alcohol and misbehave in public places with total disregard to the social norms of the area. Obviously, such behavior can cause serious offence for the local people. Moreover, youngsters from the host country, with little resistance towards popular culture, can start breaking away from their customs and traditions by imitating expatriates in the way they dress and conduct themselves socially. As a result, massive cultural decline can be ensuing.
All things considered, although tourism could play an important role in improving the economies of developing countries by creating new revenue sources and reducing unemployment, it can bring about large-scale environmental and cultural destruction that, in the long-run, clearly cost more to the country than its monetary benefits. I believe that tourism is a double-edged sword, and needs to be managed carefully.
