#application #suggestion 🖇 Do children from private schools have a higher chance of getting into the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge? If so, why and how can they afford it? I had to attend a training session on Oxford admissions the other day, and there were loads and loads of fascinating statistics that came out during the course of that training. I’ll try and summarise the ones which interested me most. — Of UK applicants, approximately 30% of Oxford applicants come from independent schools, and 70% from the state sector. But independent schools will make up around 31.5% of admissions. So they do slightly better per application than state school students, but not much. But see point 3 below. — Of all the students who get A*A*A or better at A-level, they are roughly twice as likely to apply to Oxford if they went to an independent school than if they went to a state school. Oxford has poured a lot of time, effort and money into trying to increase applications from the state sector amongst that group. They did not have good data on the state school students who weren’t applying - whether they were going to other universities, or just not going to university at all. — Applicants from state schools are disproportionately more likely to apply to the five most competitive courses to get admitted to at Oxford (law, medicine, PPE - and I can’t remember the other two). Applicants from independent schools are disproportionately more likely to apply to the five least competitive courses to get admitted to at Oxford (one was classics, but I can’t honestly remember the other four). This has not been a part of Oxford’s focus in terms of increasing state school applications because, in broad terms, they don’t think they should be trying to talk able students out of wanting to be doctors or lawyers just to try and improve their student balance. — Oxford applications come disproportionately from areas of the country where a higher percentage students apply to university. They presented this as a point of concern that they are working to overcome, although to be honest with you, I didn’t entirely follow their logic on that one (probably shouldn’t admit that on a public forum….). Here is my understanding for the elite Private US universities: The applicants are divided into two pools: • US citizens, permanent residents and legal refugees •International There are professional full time admissions staff members who are assigned to each pool. The colleges typically have a self-imposed Quota on international undergraduate students, and each of the two groups knows the “target number” of applicants they can accept. Then at least two if not three admissions staff members assigned to your pool will read your complete application. They will rate your application in some manner/form. They will have Rounds of review and keep accepting applicants until they have the number that they have preset. No one is rejected. They are merely Not admitted. Once they have the number of admissions that they want, they will take the next “group” and place them in a Wait list category. However, the applicant must Agree to be in the wait list pool. For example some colleges will accept 1,500 applicants, place 400 on the wait list and then hope that 1,100 of those 1,500 accept and pay a non-refundable deposit. Then during May (typically) they will go to the wait list to nail that 1,100. Sometimes no one from the wait list is admitted. Other times 20 or 30 are admitted. So, always enroll in another college if you are on a wait list. It is Holistic. More than Half of the applicants have more than the requisite academic prowess for those colleges and less than 10% are admitted. Therefore, the college Assumes you believe that the college is a good fit for You. Then the college looks for applicants that are a good fit for the College. And in many of those colleges, the admissions committee will make certain that the varsity sports teams get the number of athletes that they Need. The reason you're not getting straight A's has nothing to do with your intelligence, and everything to do with your study strategies. Here's how. First, focus on active learning methods rather than passive ones. It will feel more challenging initially, but that means it's working, and what you learn will actually stick. Second, ensure your environment is conducive to learning. Minimize distractions and study solo or in small groups, meaning with only 1 or 2 other people. Third, pace yourself by forcing 25 minute blocks of intense focus followed by 5 minutes of break. This is the Pomodoro technique. Fourth, use practice questions from the very beginning and review them thoroughly, not just to check whether you got the answer right or wrong. This is an insanely powerful study tool. And fifth, use spaced repetition with active recall to consolidate and memorize information. And use the Feynman technique to memorize challenging concepts. @pre_med_major
