Today is also the 78th anniversary of the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, the German cruise ship that was once the pride and joy of the Strength Through Joy fleet, the National Socialist project which brought luxury vacations and leisure to millions of working class Germans. In one of the worst war crimes of the Second World War, a Soviet submarine deliberately torpedoed the cruise ship as it was overcrowded with thousands of German refugees fleeing communist atrocities in the east. The defenseless ship went down at night in the icy waters of the Baltic, taking 10,000 innocent people down with it including 5,000 children. A few days later, the same sub torpedoed another German refugee ship, the Steuben, killing another 4,500 defenseless people. 90 years ago today, Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany. Representatives of von Papen and Hitler agreed on a new government with Hitler as Chancellor, von Papen as Vice Chancellor, and Nazi leader Wilhelm Frick as Minister of the Interior. The remaining cabinet positions would go to German Nationalist People’s Party politicians or non-affiliated “experts.” Though Hindenburg greeted this solution with distaste, von Papen’s argument that Germany was out of alternatives induced him to appoint Hitler Chancellor on January 30th, finally burying the corpse of a parliamentary "democracy". ⚡️⚡️HH ⚡️⚡️
