The 18 Armanen Runes which I have started to study in earnest. Fa: Ur: Thorn: Os: Rit: Ken: Hagal: Naut: Is: Ar:Sol/Sig: Bar:Laf/Lagu: Man: Yr:Eh: Ge/Gibor. Broken into 3 x 6. Most of these can be found in the Younger Futhark, so they were not 'invented' by Guido von LIst. Two runes were added to create an 8-Rune Row. List underwent a Woden-Initiation in recovering these Ancient Runes.

Comes from French, it means something like "from a cave". In architecture a grotesque is a carved face or figure, usually a chimera or monster. These were added to churches and similar structures in the middle ages to ward off evil spirits, this idea goes back further though, the idea of carving or painting a scary face or figure to ward off evil is very old. Gorgons, Evil Eyes, or faces of Orcus and similar features in Greek and Roman art and architecture have this same idea. Interestingly the Gorgon Medusa had the ability to ossify anyone who looked her in the eye. Most laymen refer to these statues and carvings as gargoyles, but they're usually not, gargoyle refers to something more specific- a water spout, usually carved into a face or monster. The name gargoyle has the same root as the word gargle, from the French "gorge" meaning throat. Many English words from the Medieval period have French roots due to the Normans making the bulk of the Aristocracy, and of course the Monarchy.
