🍁How Aphasia Affects the Brain
▪️The disorder that makes you lose your words
Language is an essential part of our lives that we often take for granted. But, if the delicate web of language networks in your brain became disrupted by stroke, illness, or trauma, you could find yourself truly at a loss for words. Susan Wortman-Jutt details a disorder called aphasia, which can impair all aspects of communication.

🍁 Euphemisms and Dysphemisms
✍🏻 Lewis Vaughn:
Euphemisms are words used to convey positive or neutral attitudes or emotions in place of more negative ones; dysphemisms are words used to convey negative attitudes or emotions in place of neutral or positive ones. These rhetorical devices work by using the persuasive force of a word’s connotations, the feelings and attitudes linked to the word’s literal meaning. The devices can mislead, obscure, and confuse. To hide the truth, political, economic, or military leaders might use the euphemism meaningful downturn in aggregate output for recession; revenue enhancement for tax increase; downsizing for firing; armed reconnaissance for bombing; neutralize for kill; enhanced interrogation methods for torture; collateral damage for civilian casualties; or soft targets for people to kill.
In debates about gun ownership, those who want to restrict gun ownership may characterize their position as “anti-assault weapon.” Those opposed to this position may label it as “anti-self-defense.” Both these labels are meant to provoke certain attitudes toward the subject matter—attitudes that may not be supported by any evidence or argument.
Consider the disparate impact on the reader of these pairs of terms, both of which refer to the same thing:
full-figured (fat)
guerrillas (freedom fighters)
routed the enemy (made a strategic withdrawal)
resolute (pigheaded)
emphatic (pushy)
sweat (perspire)
But keep in mind that euphemisms often perform a useful social purpose by allowing us to discuss sensitive subjects in an unoffensive way. We may spare people’s feelings by saying that their loved ones “have passed on” rather than that they “have died,” or that their dog “was put to sleep” rather than “killed.” Nevertheless, as critical thinkers, we should be on guard against the deceptive use of connotations. As critical writers, we should rely primarily on argument and evidence to make our case. (Vaughn, 2016: 178 - 179)

🍁 Languages are not world views.
✍🏻 Timothy Williamson:
Some philosophers deny the possibility of communication between different ‘conceptual schemes’, which they liken to mutually untranslatable languages. Others deny the very possibility of different conceptual schemes. Social anthropology demonstrates the limits of both views. Radical disagreement between human cultures is possible, but so is rational communication across such disagreements. Contrary to what some have thought, languages are not world views or forms of life; they do not dictate how you must think or behave. Instead, languages are more like marketplaces where people with clashing world views and forms of life can sometimes peacefully exchange ideas.
None of this means that no world view or belief system is truer than another. The extreme relativist belief that all beliefs are somehow equally true implies a refusal to take the challenge of other beliefs seriously. In dismissing the possibility that we are right and they are wrong, it also dismisses the possibility that they are right and we are wrong. (Williamson, 2018: 114 - 116)

🍁 Buzz Words
✍🏻 Watson et al:
Public speakers also introduce words or phrases that seem meaningful, even technical and academic, but that have no meaning at all. This is a type of extraneous material called “buzz words.” Buzz words sound interesting and informative, and in some contexts they may be meaningful, but they are often used in ways that prevent them from meaning anything clearly. Words and phrases like “synergy,” “freedom,” “crisis,” “rights,” “paradigm,” “holistic,” “robust,” “leverage,” “productivity,” and “think outside the box” have no clearly defined meaning outside of very particular contexts. In their book, A Brief History of Liberty, David Schmidtz and Jason Brennan identify at least ten different meanings of the word “freedom” that politicians use to gain support from audiences. So, when buzz words are not explicitly defined in a particular context, they have only the pretense of meaning. Combining extraneous material and buzz words, you can make up exciting nonsense:
Today, I invite you to embrace your potential for excellence! This year holds robust new opportunities, and by leveraging our efforts and thinking outside the box, we can achieve a synergy that propels us toward unprecedented success. We are starting a new initiative that will shift the paradigms of our industry in exciting and innovative ways. It is a holistic restructuring of our operational mindset. The face of culture is changing, and we’re changing with it, moving forward to meet our customers just where they need us the most. Some call this “politispeak” or “politalk” or “businesspeak.” Good reasoners call it nonsense. There is no information in this passage. But it is tempting to think there is. You can imagine someone saying: “Hey, we should invest in this company.” And if you ask why, the response might include the passage’s jargon: “Because they are shifting the paradigms of the industry! They are meeting their customers where they need them!” What do these sentences mean? Who knows? We haven’t been told. When this happens, we have to demand that speakers define their terms. 🍁 Language and Reality
✍🏻 Timothy Williamson:
According to Rudolf Carnap (1891 - 1970), when philosophers ask what sound like deep theoretical questions about the nature of reality, such as “Do numbers exist?”, what is really at stake is a practical question about which language it would be most fruitful to speak, for scientific purposes. If scientists use a theoretical language in which the word ‘number’ is logically analogous to the word ‘planet’, will that help their work? Some languages can express more than others, but greater expressive power comes with costs as well as benefits: it may generate unmanageable complexity.
For Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889 - 1951), philosophical problems arise because our ordinary language exerts a deep pull on us towards confusions. For example, grammar suggests a misleading analogy between proper names—‘the River Danube’—and numerical terms—‘the number seven’—tempting us to think that numbers are just as much objects as rivers are, only more abstract. Then we wonder how we can think about things that are nowhere. But further investigation reveals ways in which the analogy between ‘seven’ and ‘Danube’ breaks down. “He interrupted seven times” makes sense; “He interrupted Danube times” does not.
Obviously, what interested Carnap and Wittgenstein was not the six-letter word ‘number’ itself. Most of the issues would survive translating it by another word in another language. That point is often put by saying that what matters is not the word ‘number’ but the concept number. Different words can express the same concept, or have the same meaning. For them, philosophy asks conceptual questions, not merely verbal ones. It clarifies concepts, sorts out conceptual confusions. In the twentieth century, many philosophers held such views. Many still do. Naturally, those views influence how they do philosophy in practice. (Williamson, 2018: 37 - 38)

🍁 Fact and Opinion
▪️“That’s a matter of opinion.”
✍🏻 Lewis Vaughn:
When we evaluate claims, we often are concerned with making a distinction between facts and opinions. But just what is the difference? We normally use the term fact in two senses. First, we may use it to refer to a state of affairs—as in, “Examine the evidence and find out the facts.” Second, and more commonly, we use fact to refer to true statements—as in, “John smashed the dinnerware—that’s a fact.” Thus, we say that some claims, or statements, are facts (or factual) and some are not. We use the word opinion, however, to refer to a belief—as in, “It’s John’s opinion that he did not smash the dinnerware.” Some opinions are true, so they are facts. Some opinions are not true, so they are not facts.
Sometimes we may hear somebody say, “That’s a matter of opinion.” What does this mean? Often it’s equivalent to something like, “Opinions differ on this issue” or “There are many different opinions on this.” But it also frequently means that the issue is not a matter of objective fact but is entirely subjective, a matter of individual taste. Statements expressing matters of opinion in this latter sense are not the kinds of things that people can disagree on, just as two people cannot sensibly disagree about whether they like chocolate ice cream. 🍁Doing implicature in a post-football match press conference
✍🏻 Canning & Walker:
Football press conferences can be very entertaining discourse situations, especially for those interested in pragmatic implicature. On 19 February 2020 Jose Mourinho, then manager of the English football club Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs), was interviewed at a press conference following his team’s 0–1 defeat to Leipzig at the former’s home ground.
The extract opens with a forced choice question “Was it Spurs that were bad or [. . .] Leipzig [. . .] good?” where neither option casts Spurs in positive light. Mourinho answers the question with a yes-no question, “You think we were bad?” and throws the first choice in the initial question (‘bad’) back to the reporter. The reporter’s response “Well, the result says you lost at home” flouts the maxim of Relation (by not answering the question with either ‘yes’ or ‘no’) and Quantity (by saying more than is required: either ‘yes’ or ‘no’). These flouts give rise to the implicature that losing at home means that the team is ‘bad’. The discourse context (a post-match conference) means that those in the interaction will share some common ground knowledge: that away wins are more impressive than home wins; that this is reflected in the points awarded in deciding the winner in tie-breaking situations3 and conversely, that, psychological factors such as an advantage gained from increased home supporters and familiar surroundings mean that winning should be easier for the home team.
With this shared background or common ground information, it’s pretty clear that the implicature will be picked up. The assumption has to be that conversational cooperation is the communicative goal here, unless there are overriding reasons to suggest otherwise – in which case it wouldn’t be a flout and there would be no implicature. Mourinho interprets the Relation flout (“Well, the result says you lost at home”) as a hedged insult: that Spurs were bad and that they should have won because they would have had the easier time of it given that they played at their home ground. When Mourinho leaves the press conference, as he walks away, he shouts “Great question, mate”. This is an ironic side¬swipe at the reporter and is a flout of the maxim of Quality as Mourinho does not mean what he says. The reporter retorts “Great answer”, which may well generate a similar implicature because it’s not clear whether he is being ironic. If he is, then he, too, flouts the Quality maxim and in doing so distances himself from the harm done by Mourinho’s side-swipe. Or maybe he simply misses the implicature. 🍁 Could Neanderthals talk?
✍🏻 Emily Cooke
While still the topic of ongoing debate, some scientists think Neanderthals could talk and may have had language.
Neanderthals were our closest human relatives, and they had many similarities with anatomically modern humans.
But could Neanderthals talk?
Several pieces of evidence suggest they could. But to answer this question, first it's important to distinguish between speech and language. Speech refers to the ability to verbally say sounds and words. Language is far more complex; it means using those sounds to share ideas.
Some research suggests that speech was acquired long before Homo sapiens and Neanderthals split in the evolutionary tree, sometime between 400,000 and 800,000 years ago.
Andrey Vyshedskiy, a neuroscientist at Boston University, told Live Science:
"Before modern humans split from Neanderthals, the last common ancestor already possessed articulate speech,"One of the most convincing pieces of evidence to support this theory is that H. sapiens and Neanderthals share two evolutionary mutations in a gene called FOXP2. This gene is associated with the control of muscles in the mouth and face that help produce speech. Mutations in FOXP2 can cause language deficits in humans. This suggests Neanderthals could make the movements associated with speech, Vyshedskiy said. But what about language? By studying modern humans with language impairments, Vyshedskiy and colleagues have proposed that humans evolved through three different language comprehension phenotypes. The most-advanced phenotype, which is what most people have, is syntactic language. Syntactic language conveys complex narratives, uses possessive pronouns, and includes verb tenses and spatial prepositions, he said. A less-complex language comprehension phenotype, called modifier language, includes an understanding of colors, sizes, and numbers. The least-complex language comprehension phenotype involves only the comprehension of commands, he said. Command language comprehension phenotype likely evolved earliest in our evolutionary history, soon after the human line split from the chimpanzee line six million years ago, he said. Modifier language gradually evolved 3 million years later, as humans started to manufacture stone tools, followed by syntactic language acquisition a mere 70,000 years ago, he said. He proposed:
"So Neanderthals were likely speaking like us, but they had a modifier language phenotype. Effectively, Neanderthals may have spoken like a 3-year-old child – well-articulated speech, but no syntactic language comprehension”Some fossil research also supports the idea that Neanderthals had language. For example, in a 2021 study in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, researchers took high resolution CT scans of the bones related to hearing abilities. They determined that Neanderthals and modern humans have a greater sensitivity to some sounds in the frequency range of spoken language than do other primates. 🔗 Read the full text here.

Your feet be on my eyes
راه گم کردید، آفتاب از کدوم طرف دراومده:
From which side the sun has risen? Did you lose your way?

🍁 Nominalisation
✍🏻 Canning & Walker:
A good place to find nominalisations is in journalistic discourse, where the convention is to anchor news stories on headlines that encapsulate an action or series of actions into a single noun phrase. For example, read the following BBC news headline (28 December 2022).
Murder arrests over Birmingham nightclub stabbing (BBC News 2022)
The act of murdering appears here as a modifier ‘murder’ for ‘arrests’ which is a noun derived from a verb ‘to arrest’. The stabbing of a young man is presented here as a noun (a gerund – see Chapter 2), ‘stabbing’. Such grammatical conversions may be due to discourse constraints on headline text – often, the body copy that follows makes the agency more explicit (e.g. “Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who was stabbed to death on a nightclub dancefloor in Birmingham”, BBC News 2022).
As well as the generic constraints and conventions of news stories, police officers often use nominalisations as a way of distancing themselves from reported or unverified actions. This could be a conscious attempt to present a neutral institutional stance. For example, compare the use of the verb form ‘allege’ in ‘Victim alleges that suspect did X’ against its nominalised counterpart ‘There was an allegation of X’. In the former, the victim is the source of ‘allege’ which may imply that they are not believed or there is a lack of evidence from the victim, whereas no agent can be derived from the nominalised form ‘allegation’ and so no overt stance is taken towards the victim. Police also use nominalisations in the categorization of crimes. For example, an act of violence committed by someone towards another person is categorised as an ‘assault’ (Calligan 2000) and by doing so, the implicit grammatical transitive structure of ‘X assaulted Y’ is packaged neatly into a noun ‘assault’ which obscures not only the perpetrator of the ‘assault’ but also the victim as Figure 9.1 shows. (Canning & Walker, 2024: 212 - 213)

🍁 Inside the News
▪️who decide what’s newsworthy and what isn’t
✍🏻 Lewis Vaughn:
Deliberately or unconsciously, editors and reporters may skew their reporting so as not to offend their advertisers, their audience, or their stockholders. They may also moderate their reporting to keep their sources of information open. Reporters get a great deal of their news from sources such as government officials, corporate public relations people, and advocacy-group spokespersons. A reporter who irritates these sources by writing stories that they don’t like could end up being shunned by the sources. There is always the temptation, then, to craft inoffensive or watered-down stories to please the source. Not all news people give in to the temptation, but many do.
Editors and reporters are the ones who decide what’s newsworthy and what isn’t. And these decisions can help give us a clearer picture of the world or a more distorted one. The distortion can happen in several ways. First, it can arise when reporters do what we might call passive reporting. Most reporters aren’t investigative reporters, going off into the world and digging up the hard facts. Often, the news is simply handed to them by spokespersons and public relations experts hired by governments, corporations, and others who want to get their own version of the facts into the news media. In these situations, reporters may report only what they’re told at press conferences or in press releases. The result is canned news that’s slanted toward the views of the people who supply it.
Second, for a variety of reasons, publishers, editors, producers, and reporters may decide not to cover certain stories or specific aspects of a story. With so much going on in the world, some selectivity is necessary and inevitable. Too often, though, decisions not to cover something can lead the public to conclude that there is nothing happening when in fact something very important is transpiring. During the run-up to the war in Iraq, some massive anti-war protests occurred in the United States and Europe. But, at least at first, the mainstream American news media didn’t cover them, leading some observers to accuse the news media of bias in favor of the war. Likewise, some observers complain that the American news media don’t cover many international stories that news organizations in other countries cover in depth, such as famines and human rights violations in developing nations. The result, the complaint goes, is that Americans are blithely ignorant of what’s really happening in the world. Also, many times the news media forgo covering a story because they deem it too complex or too unexciting for an audience hungry for titillation, scandal, and entertainment. The police chase of a local bandit on Highway 13 may get a full hour of TV coverage, but the federal deficit’s effect on middle-income families may get two minutes, if anything.
Third, editors, reporters, and producers can dramatically alter our perception of the news by playing certain aspects up or down. Television and radio news broadcasts can make a trivial news item seem momentous just by making it the lead-off story in the broadcast. Or they can make an important story seem inconsequential by devoting only fifteen seconds to it near the end of the broadcast. Newspapers can play the same game by putting a story on the front page with a big headline and compelling photo—or embedding it on page 22 with a tiny headline. Parts of a story can also be arranged for the same effect, with the most telling information mentioned last. (Vaughn, 2016: 138 - 139)

🍁 Given Injustice: the Case of Derek Bentley
✍🏻 Canning & Walker:
Derek Bentley was the last man to be hanged in Britain. His crime – which he didn’t commit and was (much) later pardoned for – was the murder of a police officer. The judge made a great deal about Bentley’s (later disputed) confession, which contained the phrase “I didn’t know he was going to use the gun” (Coulthard 2006). The phrase concerns Bentley’s ‘accomplice’, Chris Craig – the person who actually murdered the officer – and the gun that Craig was carrying and used to shoot the officer. The judge claimed that if Bentley was telling the truth, that he did not know Craig had a gun, then why would he refer to it as ‘the gun’ and not ‘a gun’? The answer, of course, is that once Craig used said gun to shoot the police officer it was completely obvious to all that Craig did indeed have a gun! By using the definite phrase ‘the gun’ (even though it was the first mention in the confession), Bentley appears to be assuming, quite reasonably, that the gun is Given information because by that point, it is known to all concerned with the case. (Canning & Walker, 2024: 53)
▪️What is Given-New information?
Haviland and Clark (1974: 513) make the point that the primary purpose of language is to impart information; speakers/writers use language to tell their hearers/ readers something. That ‘something’ is typically information that the hearers/readers did not already know. However, when speakers/writers do impart information, the message will inevitably contain things that the hearers/readers do know. To communicate successfully (i.e. to impart information) speakers/writers must make assumptions about what their hearers/readers do and do not know, and they must choose their language accordingly. Information that the speaker/writer assumes is already known by their addressees is Given information, while information that is assumed not to be known is New (Brown and Yule 1983: 154) (ibid: 49)
▪️Signalling Given-New information
The status of information in discourse (i.e. the Givenness or Newness) is signalled by language choices made by the speaker/writer based on their assumptions about the hearer’s/reader’s knowledge. Information can be assumed to be known to their addressee and therefore Given if it has already been mentioned in the discourse or is physically present in the immediate context. Information can be assumed to be not known to their addressee and therefore New if it is not obvious in the context or has not already been introduced. Givenness can be (but not always) signalled by the definite article (‘the’) or pronouns, whereas Newness can be (but not always) signalled by indefinite reference, which usually involves the grammatical articles ‘a’ and ‘an’. (ibid.)

🍁 The Influence of English Language
✍🏻 Rodney Huddleston et al:
Almost certainly, English is now the most important language in the world. This might not have been clear even just fifty years ago, but it cannot reasonably be denied today. English is used for government business in well over sixty countries and territories around the world. By international agreement it is the primary language for all air traffic control and maritime navigation. It’s the uncontroversial choice ofofficial language for almost all international academic conferences, and increasingly the main language ofhigher education globally. The European Union is increasingly using it for conducting business even though the United Kingdom is no longer a member.
The widespread use and enormous influence of English is not due to anyone having objectively judged it to be deserving. The unique status of the language is just a side-effect of various mutually reinforcing historical trends. From the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries onward, British exploration, missionary work, imperialism, and colonial policy began to spread English around the world. The whole North American continent ultimately adopted English as its dominant language (despite important early rivals like Spanish, French, and German). India’s huge multilingual population recognized English as a subsidiary official language (alongside Hindi) for government business after independence. The twentieth century, especially after the outcomes of the first and second world wars, saw an extraordinary growth in the economic power of the USA and the British Commonwealth.
The growing importance of scientific research further strengthened the standing of English; it emerged as the language in which the majority of scientists publish their results. The economic importance of university education accentuated this effect: many universities in non-English-speaking countries allow or even require PhD dissertations to be submitted in English. And a hugely important additional factor was the global success of English-language broadcasting, publishing, songwriting, and above all film production: in Hollywood, the only place on earth where film-making budgets routinely run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, almost every film script is in English. It may not be a good thing for a single language to come so close to predominating all over the planet, but it seems to be happening. (Huddleston et al, 2022: 1; emphasis added)

More than 50 countries have English as one of their offcial languages. They include countries as widely geographically dispersed as Bangladesh, Myanmar, sudan, sierra Leone, Cyprus, Malta, The Bahamas, Vanuatu, Barbados, Namibia, and Qatar. Not everyone in those countries can speak English fuently, and not everyone uses English on a daily basis, but English is very visible in public life and in the media. Most of the countries have English as a result of their history as part of the British Empire. These different varieties of English have developed their own vocabularies alongside the original colonizing variety of English. (McCarthy, 2023: 4)📚 McCarthy, Michael. (2023).

🍁 Projection of Cultural Conditioning onto the World
✍🏻 Philip Goff:
When you look around you, you feel as though you’re looking directly at the world, and seeing things as they are in and of themselves. But a little reflection renders it obvious that we experience reality in a highly culturally conditioned way. This is perhaps most obvious when we reflect on the experience of language. When you hear someone say to you ‘Get out! The building’s on fire!,’ you can’t help hearing those words as meaning what they do. Suppose you’re standing next to a Chinese speaker who doesn’t speak English. They would just hear meaningless sounds. In a sense, that would be closer to the truth, to experiencing what’s really out there in the world. After all, the sounds themselves are just vibrations in the air. They don’t contain any ‘intrinsic meaning.’ And yet, when you know a language well, you experience sounds as intrinsically meaningful. This is just one trivial way in which we project our cultural conditioning onto the world.
This particular form of culturally conditioned experience can be interrupted, at least a little bit, simply by persistently attending to a specific word. If you say the word ‘bread’ to yourself numerous times, it starts to lose its meaning; you find yourself experiencing meaningless phonemes rather than a meaningful word. This simple game is a useful way of appreciating one of the major purposes of meditation: using persistent attention to break cultural conditioning. (Goff, 2023: 139)
