A bit of threshold magic We've nearly finished laying the floor in our new apartment and wanted to properly mark this space as ours (this isn't the only way, but part of a range of measures to take). Putting in a wooden threshold to carve into is preferred, but wasn't an option here. This was our solution. Partially in keeping with the ancient tradition of burying a sacrifice underneath the floor, combined with a threshold spell, we locked away three sacred herbs (mugwort, chamomile & tansy) and this runic spell. It reads: "Dit is ons heilig huis Blijf buiten onrechtmatige Treed binnen lieve vriend" "This is our sacred house Stay out unrightful one (outlaw) Step inside dear friend" Mirrored as to act both for those entering and leaving, but much more can be said about that detail. The herbs were chosen because we had them at hand, and also because we wish their workings to act on our house: Mugwort for fertility, Chamomile for calmth and focus, Tansy to keep out parasites. If we followed the logic of people like August Ludwig von Schlözer who named the Semitic language family after a legendary ancestor of Semitic mythology then instead of saying “Indo-European” we would call it Mannic (latin suffix) or Mannish (Germanic suffix). This ancestor is attested among Germanics as Mannaz (Latinised as Mannus) and among Indo-Aryans as Manu.

My long time audience will remember that I was once among the most adamant Luddites. Eventually I could no longer justify my position. I looked to the sources to find the proper ancestral view of technology. I found the opposite of my position. So, in trying to be a good heathen, I changed it. Many tech-pessimists will equate things like AI and robotics to malicious entities like draugr, thurses etc. The argument for this is halfway dissolved in the post itself with the admission that AI is “neither living nor dead”. Correct. Draugr in most forms were once men. They are undead. Thurses are chaos entities of manifest consciousness that exist external to man. “AI” and robotics have never lived and never will. And I have yet to hear a strong theological argument that doesn’t just boil down to vibes and preferences. On the contrary, across all European pagan traditions we find that the Gods build advanced AI-like and robotic-like inventions. Talos (Greek) – A giant bronze automaton built by Hephaestus to protect Crete. Akin to AI driven humanoid robot. Golden Maidens (Greek) – Mechanical servants created by Hephaestus. Again, humanoid robots. Horn of Amalthea (Greek) – A cornucopia providing endless food. Automated agriculture. Skíðblaðnir (Norse) – Freyr’s foldable, wind-catching magical ship. Advanced robotics. Draupnir (Norse) – A self-replicating golden ring forged by dwarves. 3D printer or code-generating LLM. Claíomh Solais (Celtic) – A perfect spear of radiant power. Cauldron of Dagda (Celtic) – A cauldron that provides endless food and sustenance. Again. Fast-Walking Boots (Slavic) – Magical boots that let you walk or run at incredible speed. A powered exo-suit. Baba Yaga’s Flying Mortar (Slavic) – A magical vehicle that Baba Yaga rides, allowing her to fly. A drone. I would even argue that the runes themselves are a gift of technology. Language is technology as is a writing script. The power to convey thought concepts via drawn shapes as vessels. I reject the Kabbalah informed Wiccan interpretation of modern “rune magick”. Instead I interpret the gift of futhark as the magic of written language. To which its wielders have demonstrated far more power over the millennia than any so-called esotericism. The counter to this would be that we aren’t supposed to emulate the holy Goðin. That would be human hubris. Which is true. However, we don’t have to look far to see that our ancestors were stout technophiles. Our holy symbols to this day are chariot wheels, hammers, spears, etc. They were buried in longships with swords, jewelry, axes and other cutting edge tech of their time. Technology is what defines us. We are the technical animal. No other species requires shoes or clothes. No other species needs to cook their food. The Gods were futurists who built advanced robotics and AI. Our sacred gift from Oðin was the technology of writing. Our ancestors saw tech as sacred. The idea that they’d stop seeing it this way after industrialization or Information Age is purely speculation and all available evidence demonstrates the contrary. Technology IS magic, IS our gift in my summation. I’d love to hear a strong argument to the contrary. But, after several years now all I’ve heard is preferences and Luddite priors. In the linked post I appreciate the positive reinforcement of creative efforts and hard work. That’s excellent. You guys know my position on elevating art and beauty. However, we as a community have been relegated to a powerless grievance bloc with no strength of recourse on anything. And with the coming age of hypermodernity, I can’t think of a worse message than tech-avoidance. Our pagan ancestors dominated the world with trade, cutting edge technology and innovation.
