so today i was studying C and implementing string helper functions using pointers. my strcat looked like this: void strcat(char *s, char *t) { while(*s != '\0') s++; while(*s++ = *t++ != '\0'); } (the bug here is actually operator precedence — != runs before = but that's not the point of this post lol) so i asked GPT why my code was wrong, it fixed it, then casually added at the bottom: "also you shouldn't do printf(pms) directly — use printf("%s", pms) instead" i almost ignored it. glad i didn't. turns out printf() isn't just a printing function — it's a parsing engine. when you pass it a string it actively scans for % symbols and treats them as instructions. %x means "pull a hex value off the stack." %n means "write to a memory address on the stack." so if a user somehow controls what's inside pms and injects %x %x %x %x ... printf just walks your stack and prints whatever it finds there. passwords. keys. memory addresses. you didn't print a string — you handed them a live window into your program's memory. and with %n? they're not reading anymore. they're writing. overwriting variables, corrupting return addresses, executing arbitrary code. the fix is literally one extra argument: printf("%s", pms); And this is called the format string attack and u know my code even had another vulnerability which is buffer overflow -> it is a common problem in a lot of places where u allow someone to read memory space they are not allowed to ... so mycode assumes that s has enough space to copy the string t, but if t is large always incrementing the pointer s will yield in reading in a memory space outside our reach which would cause one of two things: 1 -> segmentation fault or 2 -> that someone has access to unintended memory address, where for eg credentials could have been stored #c #learning @sudojajos

The moment you start measuring your chapter 3 against someone else's chapter 20, you've already lost the plot of your own story. God isn't editing everyone's book on the same deadline. He's a better author than that. Stay in your chapter. It's going somewhere. But I still say this having my own doubts but let God help my disbelief. And if I'm being honest -> this is as much a note to myself as it is to anyone reading. We're all finding our way through this together, by His grace. @sudojajos

Lesson of the Month Sometimes you may feel like you're behind compared to your friends or the people around you. But remember God has His own perfect timing. There will be seasons when you feel discouraged, when it seems like you're losing opportunities or not accomplishing what you hoped. That doesn't mean God has forgotten you. He knows exactly what you need, and He will provide it at the right time. While you wait, don't lose your faith. Everything else can be regained, but don't lose him. You can't afford that. And just wait doing all what you have to do Trust His timing. Stay faithful. 🤍 #lessons @byte_philosopher

Okay so lemme clarify my motivation for starting this: 1 - I want to actually learn and understand how OS works deeply after having taken the OS course at class ... and I think it is actually valuable 2 - The other and important one also is I am thinking about experimenting with my own research endeavors on substituting the rule of thumb modules for OS design in different parts of it: like scheduling, page replacement algos, and other staff. I had the intuition like why dont we make this like this and that while reading abt the current ones ... but u know it doesnt make sense if I just say why not like this if I dont understand what the current ones are deeply + also maybe other research methods + also older and methods ... So I am calling for all enthusiasts who want to embark on the journey with me 🙌 we will be using MIT's xv6 learning OS for our experiments and learning @sudojajos

Okay so guys with finals finished, I should reveal my summer plan :) right? So here we go: 1 -> Me and my team have some unfinished work with a client - that would take a week or so. So finishing that - and potentially find another one let God help us. 2 -> Me and my other team :) have started some startup idea and we already have applied for two incubation centers - in the first one we already had a pitch and we will have another soon ... and on the second one we are waiting for hearing words from them (this is the EAII AI Startup Center, I think some of u may have experience here and would be glad to hear it) -> pray for me we succeed. 3 -> Ofc continue with my Mathematics AI R&D at iCog - I might have zoned out here, so I will be focusing deeply here 4 -> I will start working on a survey research paper with a colleague of mine(we have the topic in mind, I will let u know what it is after having firm ground on it). 5 -> So here comes the boom(the 6 month spanning project we will be embarking on) -> so we will learn OS by building our own :) I will tell u my motivation for this one. 6 -> So the other exciting thing is I will be starting a deep study on theology(focusing on topics not some random topics rather selecting one topic and going deep on it) and also reading patristic + other books and will drop my summaries here after reading through them. I will be sure u will profit from these. 7 -> sleep 😁 #summer #plans @sudojajos

The people this country calls "teachers" and "lecturers" are literally the reason we're producing incompetent and incurious graduates. Today we had a computer graphics project presentation, we built procedural infinite terrain generation from scratch, perlin noise, fBm layering, real time lighting, GLSL water shaders, stuff we tried a lot to actually understood deeply. You know what this man's first question was? "where is the code for the weapon" bro hadn't even looked at the screen, didn't know what perlin noise is, didn't know what a shader is, couldn't even tell the difference between a a monitor and a television. Just sat there nodding at whoever sounded confident enough. And the worst part is this isn't even shocking anymore, I've seen this exact same thing with so many "lecturers". A person who doesn't understand the subject examining students on the subject, and somehow that's just normal here. It's not a one time thing it's the whole system and it's genuinely costing this country something real. #learning_system @sudojajos

https://numba.pydata.org/ huh interesting he mentioned there is a OS compiler for python which basically changes python code to machine code before execution eliminating the interpreted nature of python(basically having c and python combined) and the efficiency change was actually insane 200k sec -> 1k sec which is 99.5% efficiency gain 😱
