Alhamdulillaah we have the blessing of being taught this by our beloved teacher Abuu 'Atiyyah Mahmoud every week. This lesson is worth travelling hours for! There is a mistake in the transliteration of point five. It should say 'QadrAllaahu, not QadrAllaahi'. Someone pointed this out. May Allaah reward them.

بســـم اللــه الرحــمــن الـرحـــيــم Select Gems from Sheikh Abū Bilāl's Tafsīr Al-Baghawī class: We recently began Tafsīr Sūratul Ḥajj with the Sheikh. Below are some of the benefits extracted from Class 1: 1. The scholars differed as to whether Sūrah Ḥajj is Makkī (revealed before the Prophet's Hijrah) or Madanī (revealed after Hijrah)...The Sheikh holds that the Āyāt in this Sūrah a mixture between Makkī & Madanī; as is the opinion of most scholars (jumhūr). Some have said: Sūratul Ḥajj is an amazing Sūrah, because it contains: - Āyāt revealed during war as well as peacetime - Āyāt revealed during night as well as daytime - Āyāt revealed during travel as well residency - Āyāt Nāsikhah as well as Mansūkhah (Verses which have come to abrogate a previous as well as Verses that have already been abrogated) - Makkī Āyāt as well as Madanī Āyāt. 2. Sūratul Ḥajj is superior to all the remaining Sūrahs in that it contains two prostrations of Tilāwah (Sajdah At-Tilāwah) [Āyah 18 & 77] قال الحافظ ابن حجر رحمه الله: وعن خالد بن معدان رضي الله عنه، تابعي صغير من أهل الشام، وله ..... من سورة الحج، عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال: ..... سورة الحج سجدتين. [رواه أبو دواد بمراسيله، ولا بأس بإسناده عند أبي داود، وهو دليل على أنَّ الحج فيها سجدتان] 3. The places wherein one should perform Sajdah At-Tilāwah is more restricted inside the Ṣalāh than outside of the Ṣalāh; that is because the Prophet ﷺ prostrated in only four places within Ṣalāh (i.e. Sajdah At-Tilāwah); these four are as follows: - Sūratul ‘Alaq (Āyah 19) - Sūratul Inshiqāq (Āyah 21) - Sūratun Najm (Āyah 62) - Sūratu Ṣād (Āyah 24) * Another fact which proves the above point is that the Prophet ﷺ would usually recite Sūrah As-Sajdah in the first Rak‘ah of the Fajr prayer on Fridays, but despite that it was not reported from him that he ever prostrated Sajdah At-Tilāwah when reciting this Surah inside Ṣalāh. 4. The Basmalah (﷽) is an individual Āyah which separates between each Sūrah - except Sūrah At-Tawbah; as it commences without Basmalah. Also, the Basmalah is not considered amongst the seven Āyāt of Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah (according to the most correct opinion). However, the Basmalah is an Āyah in Sūrah An-Naml (Āyah 30). 5. When a person recites the Basmalah inside Ṣalah, the Sunnah is to recite it quietly at all times. But if one is reciting outside of Ṣalāh, the Sunnah is to recite the Basmalah audibly; the evidence for this is that when Sūrah Al-Kawthar was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ, he ﷺ said: it has been revealed to me (and then he began reciting the Sūrah beginning with: بســـم اللــه الرحــمــن الـرحـــيــم إنا أعطيناك الكوثر...(السورة) 6. قال البغوي رحمه الله: يقال 'مرضع' بلا هاء إذا أريد الصفة، مثل حائض، وحامل، فإذا أرادوا الفعل أدخلوا الهاء. 7. التفسير بـ'أي' يستعمل معه ضمير التكلم، والتفسير بـ'إذا' يستعمل معه ضمير الخطاب. مثال ذلك: يقال: ذهلت عن كذا، أي: تركتُه وانشغلتُ بغيره يقال: ذهلت عن كذا، إذا: تركتَه وانشغلتَ بغيره Tanbeehāt: 1. Some things are just better left untranslated (benefit 6 & 7). 2. There were more benefits than this, but this is what Allāh made easy for me to note down. 3. The intent in relaying these benefits is to demonstrate to the reader the amount of benefits a student of knowledge can attain in the sittings of knowledge. أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلِّمْنِي دُعَاءً أَدْعُو بِهِ فِي صَلاَتِي‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ "‏ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا، وَلاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، وَارْحَمْنِي، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ Abuu Bakr As-Siddeeq, may Allaah be pleased with him, said to the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam: "teach me a supplication by which I may invoke (Allaah) in my prayer." He (the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Say, Oh Allaah, I have oppressed myself with a great oppression, and there is none who forgives sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy upon me. Verily, You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful." Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree, No. 6326
