QUESTION: Who was going to take away the sin of the world? Since John 1:17 takes about grace, does that mean that the Law was not important? Firstly, grace is an attribute of God exercised toward undeserving human beings. We did not seek for it, but it was sent in search of us. God rejoices when He bestows His grace upon us, not because we are worthy, but because we are so utterly unworthy. Our only claim to His mercy is our great need Romans 6:1-2 (KJV) _1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?_ _2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?_ Since it's given to a sinner it doesn't mean that it's a passport to break his law. For instance, if you forgive someone when he least expects it, it doesn't mean that you are giving him permission to do more harm. Likewise with Christ. Romans 7:7-9 (KJV) _7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet._ _8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead._ _9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died._ Paul didn't know that he was a sinner until the law was revealed to him, because the law exposes sin. John 1:17 (KJV) _17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ._ Grace and law kiss each other, and they both agree on one. The Lord God through Jesus Christ holds out His hand all day long in an invitation to the sinful and fallen. He will receive all. He welcomes all. It is His glory to pardon the chief of sinners. He will take the prey from the mighty, He will deliver the captive, He will pluck the brand from the burning. He will lower the golden chain of His mercy to the lowest depths of human wretchedness, and lift up the debased soul contaminated with sin. Every human being is the object of loving interest to Him who gave His life so that He might bring men back to God. Souls guilty and helpless, liable to be destroyed by the arts and snares of Satan, are cared for as a shepherd cares for the sheep of his flock. The Saviour's example is to be the standard of our service for the tempted and the erring. The same interest and tenderness and long-suffering that He has manifested toward us, we are to manifest toward others. _"As I have loved you,"_ He says, _" that ye also love one another."_ John 13:34. _*The Law and Grace*_ MEMORY TEXT John 1:17 (KJV) _17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ._ NB To understand the relationship between Law and Grace. We want to know that by the coming of Christ does that mean we were done away by the Law? NB QUESTION: Who wrote the moral law? Exodus 31:18 (KJV) _18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God._ *The Law was written by Christ himself and he gave it to Moses.* Jehovah revealed Himself, not alone in the awful majesty of the judge and lawgiver, but as the compassionate guardian of His people: _"I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." He whom they had already known as their Guide and Deliverer, who had brought them forth from Egypt, making a way for them through the sea, and overthrowing Pharaoh and his hosts, who had thus shown Himself to be above all the gods of Egypt—He it was who now spoke His law."_ The law was not spoken at this time exclusively for the benefit of the Hebrews. God honoured them by making them the guardians and keepers of His law, but it was to be held as a sacred trust for the whole world. The precepts of the Decalogue are adapted to all mankind, and they were given for the instruction and government of all. Ten precepts, brief, comprehensive, and authoritative, cover the duty of man to God and to his fellow man; and all are based upon the great fundamental principle of love. -"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself."_ Luke 10:27. See also Deuteronomy 6:4, 5; Leviticus 19:18. In the Ten Commandments, these principles are carried out in detail, and made applicable to the condition and circumstances of man. QUESTION: Did Christ come to change the law, since John 1:17 says that he came with Grace and truth? Matthew 5:17-18 (KJV) _17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil._ _18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled._ After his baptism, Christ emphasized he came not to destroy but to fulfil. For he is God he changes not. He is the one who gave the law to Moses and he is the same Who came to fulfil it. In his words, he said, Matthew 5:27-28 (KJV) _27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:_ _28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart._ That was a fulfilment of the Law not to change. QUESTION: How many laws do we find in the Bible? We have moral precepts (Ten Commandments) (James 2:8, 12) referred to as the royal law. Which was spoken by God himself (Deuteronomy 5:22), and written with God's finger. Secondly, we have the ceremonial laws (Ephesians 2:15; Hebrews 9:15) contained in ordinances. This was given to Moses to speak to the people (Exodus 24:13 (KJV); Exodus 24:3). _3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do._ *Brief explanation about the ceremonial laws* This was given after man had sinned as a remedy for sin. (Leviticus 6:1, 7) John 1:29 After an individual had sinned in ancient Israel, he had to provide a lamb, goat, cow, or dove according to his prosperity to offer as a sin offering and he had to confess all his sins on the animal, then the priest slaughtered the animal and collect its blood and sprinkle it in the sanctuary. QUESTION: Which law was nailed at the cross? Colossians 2:14, Matthew 27:51 It is the law of ordinances or ceremonial laws which were nailed at the cross because they pointed to Christ as the true lamb (John 1:29).
