🌐 Macro/Market Update Literally digital detoxing for the past 3 days and will continue to do so for the next days, but taking the time today to write a quick/short update for this week as it’s a eventful one and I don’t want to let you guys hanging. Let’s start with a short retrospective of the past weeks major news: $AAPL / Apple dropped 6% and since the stock, along with tesla, is considered an indicator of market / mega-caps well-being, this had a strong impact on overall investor sentiment, especially for high risk assets / growth stocks. The reasons for this include China's potential efforts to ban iPhones for government officials and the like. Simultanously, Huawei unexpectedly introduced a relatively modern smartphone (despite US sanctions), which they were not supposed to be capable of building. If you put shit in perspective its ridiculous though, as the stock price barely moved back to mid-august levels… Now let’s dive into this week’s events: ◽️Tomorrow the new iPhone drops. As the market is super emotional, this could actually have an impact on the stock price as well as on the overall market sentiment. ◽️Wednesday, undoubtedly marks the most significant Macro event for the USA and probably for the global markets as well: the CPI figures for August. For the headline, driven by energy prices, we anticipate an increase from +3.2% YoY to +3.6%, while core inflation is expected to decrease from +4.7% to +4.3%. While the central bank prefers to focus on core inflation rather than headline figures, the former is currently distorted by the "shelter" component. This component enters inflation with a time lag of 6-12 months, and it's widely known that it will decrease significantly in the coming months (while headline is expected to increase further). ◽️As if that weren't enough, on Wednesday, the FTX Liquidation hearing is also taking place. This is where the effective decision will be made on whether and how the remaining assets under former FTX Custody will be sold off. Insiders are anticipating a long-term sell-off plan, where an absolute maximum of $100 million per week could hit the market, potentially totaling between $4-7 billion in sales. It is expected that a green light for the sell-off will lead to further price declines, with the market clearly attempting to front-run this today already. ◽️Thursday brings us the ECB's rate hike decision / Lagarde presser. Most of the time this was a non-event, but this week even this event could be exciting: The market is in the dark about the outcome, evenly divided between "no interest rate increase" and "a 0.25% interest rate hike." A rare occurrence which could lead to even more vola. We also get the US PPI (Headline is expected to rise from 0.8 to 1.2%, Core is expected to fall from 2.4 to 2.2%) – overall a rather unimportant event in the big picture of this week. ◽️You want more volatility? No problem – on Friday we have on top of all this a quadruple Witching day (a large options expiration date for index options, index futures, single stock options and single stock futures normally causing a extremely high volatility).
