Dear colleagues, the following position is open Postdoc / PhD positions in Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning at LMU Munich We are looking for qualified candidates for 1 PhD and 1 postdoctoral position in the area of mathematical foundations of machine learning. The positions are affiliated with the Chair of Mathematics of Information Processing at LMU Munich. The duration of the contracts is 3 years. Extension may be possible. Research: The research of the candidates will be centered around the mathematics of deep learning. Topics of interest include mathematical analysis of (stochastic) gradient descent for learning deep neural networks (convergence, implicit regularization, geometric aspects), robustness against adversarial noise, uncertainty quantification, deep learning for inverse problems. Teaching: There will be a mild teaching load. Applicants should assist lectures in the area of mathematics of machine learning and signal and image processing as well as contribute to the general teaching activities of the Department of Mathematics by giving tutorials and helping with the organization. Requirements: You should have an outstanding MSc degree in Mathematics (Master) and, for the postdoctoral position, a completed doctoral degree in Mathematics or a related field. Profound expertise in at least one of the following areas is expected: mathematical foundations of machine learning, mathematical foundations of signal and image processing, optimization, probability theory, applied harmonic analysis. We are looking for candidates with very good analytical skills, a very high level of commitment, very good English language skills, the ability to work in a team and an independent way of working.
