#BeOpenDESIGN The Sumaho Kasa umbrella reimagines rainy day convenience by integrating a powerful magnetic smartphone holder directly into its handle, allowing users to mount their device and walk hands free. Designed for the realities of modern multitasking, it offers a full 540 degree rotation that turns the umbrella into a versatile photo tool, functioning as both a stand and a selfie stick. Available in a compact folding version or a longer model with dual mounts, the lightweight design blends practical weather protection with playful digital utility. #BeOpenDESIGN Justin Case by Eduardo Baroni is a wall-mounted umbrella stand that turns a mundane household necessity into a sculptural statement. Made from powder-coated steel, its bold triangular form leans away from the wall, creating a dynamic silhouette that looks like art even when it’s empty. By lifting storage off the floor and giving it a striking visual identity, the stand uses its angled shape to naturally cradle full-size umbrellas without clips, while three hooks accommodate compact ones, keeping everything organized through gravity alone. A removable water reservoir at the base catches drips, ensuring your floors stay dry. More unconventional umbrella stands on our blog.

#BeOpenDESIGN Central Saint Martins graduate Olivia Gino has creatively repurposed discarded cigarette butts into a shearling-style hat, challenging perceptions of waste through her project “Cigarettes Have Never Been So Cool.” Using cellulose acetate, the polymer found in cigarette filters, Gino collected cigarette waste from various sources and processed it through cleaning, ethanol rinsing, and felting to form a workable textile. When the material proved fragile, she reinforced it with embroidery, adding squiggly stitching and a shearling-like band made by fusing short fibres in melted acetate. Her work highlights the environmental threat of cigarette waste, which makes up the world’s largest source of litter, while demonstrating how design innovation can transform even the most unpleasant refuse into valuable new materials.

#BeOpenDESIGN Crafted entirely from discarded rice husks, Rice Husk Village by designer Subin Cho invites children to build and balance miniature villages on a tilting tray, turning sustainability into a game. Each blockб biodegradable, safe, and compostableб can be stacked into houses, bridges, and trees, then returned to the earth after playtime ends. Beyond its charming aesthetics, this modular toy set cleverly teaches young minds the beauty of circular design, proving that even agricultural waste can spark creativity, connection, and environmental awareness. #BeOpenDESIGN Vadim Kibardin’s Egg Box Sneakers transform ordinary recycled egg cartons into sculptural, handcrafted footwear, turning everyday waste into wearable art. Using only two types of cartons, the design preserves the iconic sneaker silhouette while exploring the structural and aesthetic potential of discarded materials. Each pair is unique, emphasizing craftsmanship and the creative reuse of resources, while challenging conventional notions of what materials are suitable for design. More than a quirky concept, these sneakers spark a conversation about sustainability, value, and the hidden beauty in objects we typically throw away. #BeOpenDESIGN TreeSoil is a robotic 3D-printed earthen shelter designed by the Technion’s Material Topology Research Lab and the Weizmann Institute’s Tree Lab to create microclimates that nurture young trees. Drawing inspiration from ancient arid-land farming techniques, it uses computational design and local soil mixtures to form modular, interlocking structures that regulate temperature, airflow, and moisture. Fabricated with a KUKA robotic arm and biodegradable materials, the shelters naturally disintegrate as trees mature, returning nutrients to the earth.

#BeOpenDESIGN German design student Moritz Walter is redefining domestic heating with his innovative concept, Hotspot—a visionary approach that challenges the inefficiency and aesthetic limitations of traditional systems. Rather than warming entire rooms, Hotspot focuses on creating localized heat zones that deliver comfort precisely where it’s needed. By integrating electrically heated textile technology, Walter has developed a design-forward system composed of elegant wall-mounted radiant panels and mobile modular units that provide near-body warmth on demand. This decentralized model not only enhances energy efficiency but also aligns seamlessly with the transition toward renewable power sources.

#BeOpenARCH Students from London’s Architectural Association have pioneered A Forest Datum, a low-cost, repeatable construction system that transforms discarded tree forks into structurally sound building components. Developed within the AA’s Design & Make program at Hooke Park, Dorset, the project explores sustainable timber use by repurposing the naturally strong, interwoven grain of forked branches typically treated as waste into an elevated forest walkway. Using a simple, adaptable jig made from wood and 3D-printed connectors, the team precisely trims irregular forks to create modular, load-bearing units assembled with Dyneema cable tensioning. The approach eliminates the need for advanced machinery, emphasizing low-tech ingenuity and circular design principles that could be applied globally.

#BeOpenDESIGN Stella Vita is the world’s first solar-powered mobile home, designed by students from Eindhoven University of Technology, that transforms sustainable travel into a fully functional lifestyle experience. Its large roof-mounted solar panels, which unfold into a wing shape to maximize energy capture, provide enough power for both driving and living needs, including cooking, coffee, showers, and charging devices. The vehicle features an energy-awareness system that lets users monitor and manage consumption, encouraging conscious use of solar power. With a range of up to 730 kilometers on sunny days and expandable living space when the roof is raised, Stella Vita combines innovative design, environmental responsibility, and the freedom of mobile living into a visually striking and practical solar-powered home on wheels. #BeOpenDESIGN Bilid, a rattan room divider by MOOQUE, transforms a traditional material into a poetic expression of balance and harmony. Crafted with two contrasting rattan weaves and subtle pastel tones, it celebrates coexistence between density and openness, tradition and modernity. More than a functional partition, Bilid acts as a visual pause within a space, filtering light and shaping mood with quiet elegance. Its dual-sided design and emotional color palette turn everyday craftsmanship into contemporary art, embodying the essence of modern craft.

#BeOpenDESIGN About the size of a cardholder and just 10mm thick, Uphold unfolds from a flat, minimalist pack into a full set of spoon, fork, and knife using an origami-inspired mechanism that bends metal into ergonomic form. Made from food-grade titanium, aluminum, and flexible TPU/TPE, it’s lightweight yet durable enough for daily use, and fully recyclable at the end of its life. Weighing just 75 grams, Uphold is rated for at least 3,000 uses, giving it the potential to last over a decade of daily use. Every piece is easy to disassemble and fully recyclable, embodying a cradle-to-cradle philosophy that directly tackles the global plastic problem. More ingenuous travel cutlery on our blog.

#BeOpenARCH The Solar Winds Wine Tasting Pavilion by designer Michael Jantzen reimagines how renewable energy can shape the architectural experience rather than hide behind it. Conceived as an unbuilt concept for a winery, the pavilion transforms solar panels and wind turbines into sculptural, expressive elements that define the building’s identity. Flowing steel panels—some embedded with flexible photovoltaics—sweep across the structure like waves, echoing the rhythms of the surrounding vineyards while generating clean power. A vertical-axis wind turbine adds both visual drama and renewable output, turning energy production into an integral part of the visitor experience.

#BeOpenARCH Lift House by Ulf Mejergren Architects (UMA) is a compact, gabled timber refuge mounted on a repurposed mobile scissor lift, created for the Beredd (Ready) exhibition at ArkDes. Designed as a response to climate instability and flooding, the project explores architecture’s adaptability by proposing a “temporary retreat” strategy—allowing the structure to rise above the ground when needed. Combining industrial mechanics with vernacular Swedish design, the red-painted lift supports a lightweight timber cottage crafted for balance and efficiency.
