#BeOpenDESIGN Landscape architecture firm Thailand-based Shma Company Limited has completed a stunning sculptural-like hotel frontage landscape design for Le Meridien, a small-scale renovation project in Zhengzhou, China. As a respect to the historical weaving textile industry of Zhengzhou, the team created a series of undulating lawn stripes that are meant to represent the silk being woven – up and down – into fabric sheets by traditional machine.

At the core of the revolutionary water filtration technology named Ecofiltro lies a clever concoction of activated charcoal, clay, and colloidal silver. The filtration process through clay imparts a natural cooling effect and alkaline properties that can aid metabolism. The addition of colloidal silver infuses the filter with antibacterial properties, preventing the growth of bacteria and algae within the filtration system, while activated charcoal employs adsorption process, which chemically binds impurities to its surface.

#BeOpenDESIGN The N+L series by Lisbon design brand FEIT consists of a baby cradle Nina that can be easily turned into a drawing table Luca. The crib can be used for babies up to nine kilograms and is designed to be transformed into a desk for young children by adding a smooth wooden top drawing block when the baby outgrows it. As people move around within the building, they are encouraged to sit down and read. The walls occupied by bookshelves reach a height of up to 6 meters, while the ceiling descends towards the middle of the room creating a double-height space akin to a ship’s hull. Ortiz draws inspiration from the world of fungal growth colonizing tree trunks for his latest ongoing project, the Urupê Tower, a mixed-use building in the heart of São Paulo. The biophilic design principles are incorporated into the project using scattered planters across every level of the tower. The planters, as well as lush vegetation emerging from climbing terraces, are supposed to bring pockets of life that purify the air and create a direct link to nature within the urban environment.

#BeOpenARCH Inspired by the outline of the surrounding mountains, Yang Liping Performing Arts Center in the Chinese city of Dali by Beijing-based architecture office Studio Zhu-Pei is characterized by an undulating slate-covered roof that incorporates viewing areas and seating. The structure merges with the partly sunken garden spaces, creating a sense of connection between landscape and stage according to the old Chinese principle of yin and yang, where two opposites combine to form a whole. A set of steps that ascend onto the roof provides casual seating for viewing performances taking place on the indoor stage or in the plaza.

Smart Ringo travel water bottle incorporates a MagSafe stand for an iPhone built right into the bottle cap thus providing a stable impromptu tripod to FaceTime or create videos. The cap includes a friction hinge that the bottle’s makers sourced from a laptop manufacturer. The MagSafe ring can be placed at any angle and hold its position without shifting. Made from stainless steel, the bottle itself is cleverly designed to be stable even when empty, although it is recommended to have the bottle filled for a lower center of gravity for more stability. #BeOpenDESIGN

Achieved by cutting plywood at specific angles, the unique twisted shape of the object allows it to function as a bench or stool. The user can place their everyday items on a long beautifully bent table top or underneath it, in the compact little nook that forms below it, or even sit on it.

It is a visionary self-driving prototype, fitted with cameras, laser scanners and ultrasonic sensors, that freely moves around the car park and locates electric vehicles that are in need of charging. The entire charging process occurs without any human interaction. The project enables almost every car park to turn electric, without any complex individual infrastructural measures.

#BeOpenARCH When assigned with the task to create a new face for Hanse Merkur company in Hamburg, Germany, architects Wasfy Taha and Fionn Mögel from Querkopf-Architekten decided to devise the entrance as a sculpture, architecturally merging the 'past' and the 'present' into the 'future'. The architects designed the entrance hall as an expressive continuation of the existing glass atrium of the historic old building from the 90s into the urban space. The sculpture-like flying roof made using innovative HI-MACS solid surface material offers an overwhelming sense of space and gives the impression of absolute weightlessness.

#BeOpenaARCH Undulating form of Ayla Golf Clubhouse built by architecture practice Oppenheim Architecture in Aqaba, Jordan, is modelled on traditional Bedouin stretch tents and the surrounding desert dunes and mountains and captures the elemental beauty of the rolling desert landscape. A dynamic concrete shell drapes over the programmed areas, enveloping the interior under one continuous surface. Made with soil from the site, it is doused in local minerals and pigments by an Aqaba artist. The project combines sophisticated compound curves of the steel superstructure with the skills of local craftspeople. A concrete pump was the only piece of machinery required, with everything else done by hand for a simple and economical outcome.

#BeOpenNEWS Better Energy by Design competition focused on SDG#7: Affordable and Clean Energy received over 200 submissions from students and graduates of universities all over the world. The Founder’s Choice Prize of €3,000 has been awarded by the Founder of BE OPEN Elena Baturina, international philanthropist and businessperson. It goes to Kevin Sulca, an architect and graduate from Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas in Peru. His project Intergenerational Urban Furniture proposes a “versatile modular furniture that combines reading and play spaces with hydroponic gardening to generate economic and food sustenance in communities with a shortage of green area” so that different generations within a community could interact and learn from each other.

Allocated as a result of a month-long online vote, the cash prize of €2,000 goes to the team from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, namely to Iwana Sampaio Raydan, Zhiben Zheng, Yanqianfang Sun, Mirjam Höchst, Lorenzo Longieri, and Ece Nur Temel for Brease, a modular system designed to be adapted to the facades of buildings. It creates a vertical garden that works as insulation and shading panel, helping households save energy.

#BeOpenARCH London and Shanghai based architecture firm Daniel Statham Studio has designed a new vertical car park in Hangzhou, China, as a synthesis of the latest automated parking technologies, public space, event spaces and hanging gardens. Named Future Car Park, the facility accommodates 500 cars and uses a fully automated lift system to stack them in one of the three circular towers. Vertical movement of the cars within the towers is visible through the metal louvres that clad the façade. The towers of the car park are connected by a roof form that accommodates a rooftop garden and viewing platforms, as well as spaces for events and exhibitions. #BeOpenDESIGN Award-winning industrial design office located in Seoul SWNA has developed a modular kitchen furniture system that uses cooking tools and tableware to make the kitchen look alive and visually appealing. The Dancing Grid is a wall shelf design that utilizes six different tiles in a flat space with 3D printed kitchen accessory modules. The various tiles, ranging from shelving to peg boards, are composed on the wall panel with balance that comes from the proportionality between visual elements such as points, lines, and planes. In-Out Tile, on the contrary, is designed for horizontal surfaces, like kitchen tables and sinks, creating a uniform appearance that conveys the image of smoothness even in corners.

#BeOpenARCH Designed by architect Chan-Joong Kim, landscape artist Ou-Gon Jon, and master planner Zoh Kyung-Jin, the Seoul Botanic Park is the largest greenhouse in South Korea. The design consists of four main areas: a theme park, an open forest, a lake garden, and a wetland garden, that represent botanical cultures and climate of twelve geographical locations. Externally, the garden encompasses a flower-shaped glass dome, which measures 100 m in diameter and is clad in a special glass-like plastic ETFE. This allows excellent light transmission, while its lightweight fabric reduces carbon dioxide emissions into the air.
