Copenhill, a transformed power plant in Copenhagen, Denmark designed by Bjarke Ingels Group combines a modern waste-to-energy plant with a hub of the social life of the city, featuring an environmental education and urban recreation center with a ski slope, a tree-lined hiking trail, and the tallest artificial climbing wall in the world on its facade.
The social infrastructure of Copenhill demonstrates what otherwise would remain hidden. Filled with the latest technologies in waste treatment and energy production, it is probably the cleanest waste plant, an example of ‘hedonistic sustainability’, as Bjarke Ingels puts it.

Vietnam-based Vo Trong Nghia Architects often use bamboo in their work and describe the material as the "green steel of the 21st century". For renovation of roof-top Nocenco café in the Vietnamese city of Vinh they covered the existing concrete structure of the building with bamboo material. The enormous dome-like ceiling is also covered with bamboo, which makes the space recognizable from any place in the city.

For your inspiration have a look at works by Japanese artist Kumi Yamashita currently based in New York who creates amazing shadow art by using various seemingly ordinary items and some light. The artist takes objects and place them in relation to a single light source, so that the complete artwork is therefore comprised of both the material (the solid objects) and the immaterial (the light or shadow). Her work City View features aluminum numbers adding up to create a silhouette of a woman.

Oslo Skatehall by the local studio Dark Arkitekter is the best custom-designed skatepark, and one of the largest ones in northern Europe. The idea behind the concept was to allow viewers from outside to watch the action inside. When the gates are opened, these interior and exterior skating spaces become fully connected. This distinctive feature of the building creates unique possibilities for major events and competitions.
Internally, the skatehall features an exposed sculptural organically shaped framework for the raised bowl which resembles a beautifully strange mushroom completely made of ‘raw’ wood.

London-based design studio Ayaskan have developed Sand, a garden clock inspired by the landscape art of kare-sansui – Japanese Zen rock garden. The clock visualizes the passage of time using a rake that crosses the sandy surface leaving ripples behind. In the daytime the clock’s single hand draws pattern of concentric rings on the sand over a period of twelve hour cycles, and at night these patterns are gradually smoothed out to restart a new cycle.

Architect from Oregon Eric Meglasson designed Azur Reading Retreat. This cozy little hideaway to read, recharge or just enjoy some vintage tunes on the turntable was commissioned by the owners of a custom home in the mountains previously developed by Meglasson. Designed to allow quick installation with a minimal impact on the property, the completely prefabricated structure rests on concrete block footings and is powered by a Tesla Powerwall battery. The exterior finishes – steel and weathered cedar – were selected for their sustainability characteristics.

Mexico-based architectural designer Antony Gibbon developed the Twine, a monumental residential project which is notable by twisting spans of concrete. The undulating surfaces mimic the geometry of a natural shell, creating a feeling of fluid motion - and two conditioned zones, each one featuring a sleeping space and a kitchen lounge. This imagined structure is formed by a rhythmic series of unfolding frames echoing the topography of the distant hills.

Cayce Zavaglia, a visionary artist from Indiana, USA creates portraits that capture natural beauty through textured layers of hand stitched embroidery and bear close resemblance to classical oil paintings. Zavaglia was originally trained as a painter but then switched to embroidery as her primary medium. Her works are so life-like, that it is hard to believe they are not photographs. Using her friends and family as subjects, Zavaglia represents the duality of identity by placing the hyperrealistic front composed of hundreds of crosshatched stitches next to the abstract reverse side, as a way to start a conversation about our presented self contrasting to one’s part that usually remains hidden.

We are happy to announce that Gabrielle Aquadro, South African architect and photographer, currently based in London, has been selected the winner. Her surreal entry has brought her the prize of €300!
The open call titled ‘BEOPENReflections invited people with an eye for beauty around to share visuals of peculiar effects created by mirror-like surfaces. The participants shared their art, videos, installations and photography on the subject via Instagram, as a way to celebrate people’s ability to creatively interpret the reality around them.
