German startup Green City Solutions has integrated moss in its CityTree, the world's first intelligent biological air filter. The structure comprises a bench equipped with a so-called "living wall", which is filled with a variety of moss types that naturally absorb pollution. The wall of irrigated mosses has the air-purifying power equivalent to 275 real trees, while the whole design only takes up a fraction of the space. The CityTree creates an environment with constant access to water and shade for the mosses to thrive. Water provision is either connected or independent, thanks to a fully automated irrigation system. The living structure can be powered by solar panels or via grid connection. Using Internet of Things technology, it is able to measure and maintain its own performance and the plants' requirements. More innovative moss applications in our blog.beopenfuture.com

Local studio Unparelld'arquitectes has built an arched public shelter in Olot, Spain, intended to be used as a performance backdrop to encourage activity on the street. Named Emergency Scenery, the unfinished and appropriable structure completes what four stepped buttresses that faced the side façade of the original church building suggest, revealing in the background the traces of domestic activity marked on the party wall. A construction of three vaults and four niches is offered to the public space as a porous façade of hollow brick, accompanied by a minimum of stands. www.unparelldarquitectes.cat

For his graduate collection at the London College of Fashion, emerging fashion designer Harikrishnan has presented super-wide inflatable latex trousers. Designed to make people question the relevance of the proportions we see every day, the trousers fit snugly at the waist, while ballooning out to double the width of the wearer around the thighs. The exaggerated silhouette is achieved by pumping the trousers with air via a seven-millimeter wide inflation valve at the bottom. Harikrishnan utilizes a cutting method adopted from morphing, a technique in which images are distorted by assembling fragments of the same subject taken from different perspectives. The trousers consist of up to 30 individual latex panels that are arranged into vertical and horizontal stripes, which makes for a playful rather than fetishistic take on the material. It all starts with small simple actions. If you are a recycling enthusiast, let the community learn about your projects via our new open call. Share your visuals on the topic on Instagram with #BEOPENBetterWay hashtag and you may be the one to win €300. Rules: beopensocial.com Trashformers is a project by Athens-based designer Savvas Laz that deals with the major issue of recycling, disposal and use of styrofoam in the packaging industry. It consists of a series of colourful, geometric and eco-friendly furniture pieces. Each of them comes from a unique combination of random styrofoam pieces, utilized in the packaging of appliances such as fridges, washing machines, TVs etc., found in trash bins. The styrofoam structure was covered with a water based resin mixed with powder, pigment and fiberglass – a combination that strengthens it just enough to be used on a daily basis. www.savvaslaz.com

With Burning Man 2020 taking place in virtual format because of the coronavirus pandemic for the first time in its history, we recall the best installations of the last year’s festival. One of them is an intricate and luminous pavilion entitled ‘Andromeda Reimagined: a Sanctuary in Deep Playa’ by John Marx of San Francisco based practice Form4 Architecture. The structure reinterpreted the classical patriarchal Greek myth of Andromeda, who was saved by Perseus from a death sentence before attaining celestial immortality as a constellation, for a story of female empowerment. Relating to the infinite potential of the stars in the sky, the walls of the five-sided pyramid boasted ornate CNC-cut patterns of star-shaped cutouts and dramatic swirls mimicking trajectories of the cosmos. When illuminated from within, the installation projected its whimsical light onto the nighttime desert floor. More Burning Man 2019 installations to remember in our blog.beopenfuture.com

During quarantine this March, Lebanese-born American photographer Rania Matar noticed a neighbour through her window, which led her to think about connecting across barriers. Aiming to restore human interaction we often took for granted, she began her series Across Windows dedicated to social distancing. Through social media, she found a willing number of participants, and was amazed at how they were able to truly establish a connection and communication across a physical barrier. “The sense of being inside or outside was blurred,” she explains. “I am outside and looking in, but seeing the outside reflected onto the person in front of me.” More ‘people through windows’ themed photo projects in our blog.beopenfuture.com

Milan-based product designer Umit Can Koralay has conceptualized a space-saving multi-purpose grill that doubles as outdoor furniture. Named Domino Barbecue, the set incorporates a marble slab that can be folded to uncover the grill underneath. When you are grilling, the marble surface can be used as food preparation or serving area. Under the tabletop, there are two drawers – one is intended for storing coal and the other for cutlery. To increase awareness of the environmental impact caused by using an absurd amount of single-use plastic food packaging, Valencia-based architecture visualization studio Quatre Caps has created Not Longer Life series that aims to reinterpret the situation via an artistic approach. The series reproduces paintings from classic masters such as Monet or Caravaggio contextualizing them in the current situation, as if they were contemporary artists. Delivered from the supermarket to the photo set, the products come in an unnecessary plastic package in order to ‘ease’ their consumption and fruit are uselessly wrapped in styrofoam netting. quatrecaps.com
